It is a shame and I would really enjoy it too. Having a place like this to meet and talk to each other is a really fine thing, but kinda sad too when you make friends and know you will never meet them face to face. Many thanks for the offer though.

gotta few questions from a few previous posts,
Ice, where did you get the pads for your bench?
Mike, I see your work area is on the right, paint booth in the center, what do you use the left side of the bench for? where the build is sitting on the turntable.
I also noticed that in a lot of your work areas, the distance from the wall to the edge of your building area is a lot shorter than mine (I measure out at 36"). I tend to like all the room for more crap to pile up, but it makes it harder to reach the tools at the back of your bench. do you guys like the shorter work area, or was this not by choice.
Chris, very nice room (I am in a basement where things never dry), I would have that work area completely covered with just one build. I am pretty lucky that I have a ton of desk space, too bad its all covered with God only knows what. I have about 5% of my total area to actually work.
I am planning an redoing my room over the thanksgiving holiday, if all works out well, and am looking thru these posts for more ideas....like...
do you guys like your tools on your bench, or do you all work out of tool boxes, or drawers? I have a carousel, different tool containers that clutter my desk and the worst part is nothing ever ends up back there. it usually sits on the desk. this has been hashed and rehashed, I know. I think organizing your model area is worse than trying to understand the female species.....nope, no it's not. not even close!!
thanks for your help and sorry if I make anyone repeat themselves from earlier posts.

I ordered my pads on eBay but I'm sure you can find them in other places. Search them as self healing mats. There are different sizes and colors. I ordered mine to cover my entire working area exalts and completely.
When it comes to tools, on my bench to within arms reach I have my blades, spruce cutters and some sanding sticks. I use those plastic ones that came with the customizing kits. I just replace the grit when i need to. My filed other tools are in the drawers to be left.
Man, call me OCD or anal but I can't work on a dirty bench. I try to clean it up after every build. When I added these new mats put a lot of he bottles in a drawer for the same reason.
I try not to redo my area or I feel lost and takes days to get used to it again...although I need to reorganize the wall of aftermarket parts......meh, maybe I shouldn't.
Hope that helps. The holiday breaks are always a great time to redo the bench.

I am kind of like Ice - just wish I had a little of your OCD Ice - to stay a bit more organized! Lol
For my main, smaller bench, just like Ice, I to keep my blades, sanding files / sticks etc close by laying to my right. Along the back wall, on some shelves, I keep my paint jars and spray paints. In a cup I usually keep the brushes I use, and to the back of the bench, I keep the kits I am working in plastic tubs, along with the, used often, supply of paint jars and thinners. To my left, I usually keep my rags and an area for my dish when applying decals. Everything else I store on shelves in the hobby room, and in closets, and in dressers, and in the garage, and in the weight room, even found a set of decals one time in a bathroom drawer, how or why they got there is beyond me, but they were found there! For my newly acquired "2nd bench" - I am still putting together as I go, but basically turning about the same. This bigger bench I have areas for my compressor, and will be putting the hangers on for the air guns. Once I finally get to using them regularly - this is a S...L...O...W process, but I am getting there! Just had so many rattle cans to get through - when you get them for free - you just can't turn them down.
I will do a quick, fly by organizing tonight and snap you a picture or two!
By the way Al, let me know if you see something you need, I still owe you for those "mad" funny car decals bud!

Okie dokie Al - now don't laugh, well, guess you can - I wouldn't hear it, Ha! But here goes..... This is the entrance to the one room of the house that is ALL mine. Yeah, i have a few kits to build, and the ones in here are just the opened kits, I didnt take a picture of the 8 foot closet, other than some hanging shirts and sports apparel, (Steelers of course) - it's packed, Lol This is my old, main desk area, this where most of the kits I build come from. Currently the Kevin Harvick, black number car resides here Continuing to the next corner, there is a printer in there somewhere. I store a bunch of boxes of tires and parts here. Also air guns, compressor, etc This is the new, (old stock - lol), desk that I am still breaking in. My big scale Charger was born here, also where Freddy came from. Still cleaning up from the weirdo build, about to get out the Orange Charger funny car and work on some new decals. I have an identical stand on the other side of this desk, as on the right with the printer, stocked full of goodies as well. Then on the next wall is where I am building a new paint booth, off the side window. Going to incorporate dual filters, using furnace filters, one inside and the other on the outside of the window, on the inner side of the screen. I know, what the hell did he just say? Pictures someday will help, but this way it will vent directly out the window being drawn by a fan behind the whole unit. Trying to manipulate it on a stand, so that it is mobile if needed, but basically, all I will need to do is open the window, turn on the fan, and spray away. Then simply close the window. "If" I ever get this accomplished, I will be excited to show it off. Going to be a lighted, mobile paint booth if you will. Complete with power jacks, turntable, you name it - all the ideas I have learned, and seen or found about paint booths, all incorporated in a single - roll away style tool box / stand. It's crazy man - crazy I tell ya!

By the way Al, let me know if you see something you need, I still owe you for those "mad" funny car decals bud! boy, this helps. I guess I have my own pattern of doing things, but its so time consuming. my bench has a plethora of stuff to make it better, but it is shoved in the nooks and cranny's of everything else. when I finally reorganize the room, it is to get more usable space, things are so mishmashes together; die casts with the models in with the baseball cars and magazines in every other spot. I am really looking for little improvements and ways to condense things. like I have little cardboard sandpaper things for the different grits all over the room. I need to cut them down and put them in a drawer. paint is everywhere. I like ice's OCD, I like things in a certain place all the time.. but that place isn't where it should be, although I don't think I ever found model stuff in the bathroom. my modeling time is getting precious and I do enough other time wasting things in that room, I don't need to waste time looking for 800 grit sand paper.
yea Tom, I used to get a bunch of free paint, but they heard the little ball rolling around in the can when I tried to get out of the store. I will come up with a master plan and it will be the King of all model rooms!!
...and Tom, you owe me nothing, it's my choice to help out other people in need of model parts, but I would feel the same way. I ALWAYS want to return the favor, as much as any of us here. I have something in mind, when the time comes, I will let you know.

I love having the big tabletops, but I think I will have to cut it back in the main work area, just for east of reach like you said. I remember when I last "organized", couldn't find anything for days!!! thanks for the input. real nice area also. must be nice not having to deal with the cold.

I used to have a couple of warped pads myself. I used some thick, not that scotch crap, thick double sided tape and held them in place. It looked ugly when I replaced them, but it got covered again with the new pads so no harm. I love these new ones. I'm not putting out masterpieces as you can see lol, but it certainly makes me feel good, a different look with the blue for me and motivates me to keep it clean, I will say measuring and cutting has become easier. Next time I replace them I'll get a different color. To me it's good to have change to lighten up the bench. I think of it as fresh bed sheets!

Nice area Mike!! A sweet quiet little place!! Between you and ice, I do believe more shelves are going up, and more organizing is going to happen for me. You guys have inspired me to get my dam act together - now if I can just have off work tomorrow......
No Al - LOL - no worries on getting caught by the little ball a rattling. Funny though!!
Actually, I get some of my supplies from the city's household hazardous waste / public works dept. It's where people take left over paints, thinners, anything hazardous. We get all kinds of stuff from there for free, rose and plant food, LOTS of free paint, concrete cleaner, caulking, you name it, they get it. You should look for this in your city, most all have them, and the best part, it's just the gas that costs you. Everything is FREE - I like that word!!

I will start my membership to this board by showing you my hobby room. When I started back in this hobby I built on a card table. When I outgrew that area I moved to the basement. I hung blankets from the floor joists to try to keep some heat in and the dryer lint out. I finally had had enough. I built this room as a hobby room and an Earnhardt shrine. These pictures are about a year old. I am proud of the fact that I did all of the work building the room myself.

Exceptional room, John. Do you even build here?? It's so clean, all your kits are even with one another and sooooo many Tamiya kits!! I love the checker tile and the ceiling race car tile. I think you did a great job with the room. Quick question: Where do you paint?

As is the evolution of our hobby, I used to warm up the spray paint and the parts to be painted, run into the garage and spray into a big cardboard box. I would then head back into the basement, (eventually the hobby room.) I finally got a paint booth from Micro-Mark on a sale when they were blowing them out cheap or they had free shipping. I got the largest one they had because I wanted enough room to be able to larger models like airplanes and ships. The booth sets in another area of the basement where it is vented to a window, note the dual fans. It is a down draft booth.
As for the room, I had just finished my annual fall/winter clean up and thought I better take some pictures. I swore that this room would not be a source of anxiety for me. I'm very much a "place for everything and everything in its place" kind of guy. I like neat and orderly. That is just me. To further answer, I am not a prolific builder and I normally only have one project going on at once. I like to concentrate my energy on one project and do it to the best of my ability. (Are you noticing a pattern.....lol.) So yes, I do build. Usually three or four a year, sometimes less. I will be sharing the Lotus F1 with the board. I worked primarily on that model for several years and not much else got done. I would do a quick, fun build to be able to say I did something.
