That braid looks like the brush that runs on the bottom of a scalectric slot car, also on the brushes from a starter motor etc,
Great work D. hand-clapping-smiley-emoticon

Dennis to answer your question the engine "Hold-Downs" is Desoldering wick.............With it against the solder to be removed, and heat applied it absorbs the solder.... GREAT stuff!

Thanks for the good words about my build John and it does not surprise me that you would know what it was. Here is how it comes and where to get it for anybody who is interested. www.newark.com/desoldering-braid

Dennis, Youer welcome sir, truth is truth no matter how its told! As for the desoldering wick. what its called from the place I used to get it from, Braid also in some areas and or companies.....I used to order 50 feet of it at a time! jaw-dropping-smiley-emoticon As when I was making scale model trains from all brass construction in HO scale (1/87th) I used 50 feet of the stuff in less then a month....as I'd do all my soldering, and go back and "wick" off the left overs BEFORE painting happen. as the seams would allow it to bubble in some cases specially using a resistance soldering iron!! LOVE that thing too, best $800 I EVER spent... a resistance soldering station with 3 heads any one could be used at any given time as long as the power to it was flipped on, and each could be set to a different voltage.....Was nothing to do a Big Boy boiler cab, and some detail in one 2 hour sitting with it, when before I had that soldering station that same work would take me a freakin week or more to complete! The desoldering wick tho, GREAT for a loto f things too... it makes on hell of a "Grounding strap" for train controls too!

My father was a Master Chef and retired from Churchill Downs where they run the Kentucky Derby as a Master Chef, but before that he was a Master Journeyman welder and he had the stuff around all the time. Most people have no idea what it is.

Whats the thickness of what you pictured and used here? 3/16's? or smaller? I've had it all the way up to 1/4 inch! ALL braided copper......Some strong stuff too (good for what you did with it here!) The wide stuff, is a desoldering "cleaner" to use the same part and not leave any or much remaining solder to the surface applied.....THAT stuff however for a spool about the size you posted pics of, is damned expensive! The 50 foot rolls I got of the standard stuff, was pricey, in the beginning but spanned on how long it lasted me, works out to be a buncha no trips to get it, and saved gas mileage, and time was the big factor..... But $40 a roll......wasn't to bad considering I think those spools you pictured are like $10 these days! At least locally it is anyway (Price of copper and brass went up) so......

I posted the site where you can buy it with the pic. It cost $4.56 for 30 feet.

Burl Ives? I LOVE his song Silver & Gold.....BUT WAIT, I'm not an old FART! Matter of fact MOST of his Christmas songs are GREAT! But Silver & Gold is my favorite from him....... he also did the TV shows 'round Christmas with the "Clay" figure movies (I can't remember what they're called) BUT those are older then all of us here........... Those where your mom and Dads kids when the shows were new. and all........ They didn't play them last year on TV in this area......... and I hope that this year, is different, I didn't even see "Miracle on 34th street" last year either, which is odd to me! Kinda kills that Christmas spirit you know?

I'm cursed with the Christmas thing from my Dad Doc, and thats MY STORY and I have to stick to it. you know, if any one of you knew him, you would know instantly what I'm talkin about here. the man had WAY to much Christmas deco................. almost to much... I used to joke with him and say, you know its a fine line between insanity, and hoarding.... your walking BOTH sides of that line....He'd laugh and call me a brat LMAO well he was partly right......... Those were the fun times, in 3 years we had many of them when ever possible his favorite saying was to tell me I was a brat... LOL I guess, I was thee only one he had to be able to call a brat..... LOL
