To Glidden or not to Glidden, that is the question! Well, whatever name you want to use, I've followed Skips tips for re-priming the body with a new method and was ready to shoot it when we had a drastic weather change. First it rained which messed up the humidity in our basement (paint booth needs an open window to vent out of) and then the temps went from 70's to 30's. So, we're creeping up into the 50's again and another opportunity might be this weekend. I've been waffling over this whole idea of the 2 color paint scheme required for the Ford pro stocks. I don't want to screw-up all the hard work, much less go through so many bodies as I did with my Nova.
The paint job requires red on top and a section of white on the bottom; from approx 2/3 down the door to the bottom, all the way around. My other option was to paint the entire body bright yellow (like the Mustang in my avatar) and get decals made saying "Twee-T-bird", along with a couple of special cartoon figures of the Sylvester and Tweety Bird I found on the 'net. The only issue would be getting Firebird Designs (I think thats the name) to make the decals.
Since this is an older kit and I'm not sure of the condition the decals will come off in, would it be better to use my own idea rather than make it a 1:1 paint job? Thanks all. Once this build is painted, I have a Mustang like CM's ready to get an Inca Gold paint job and hopefully custom decals to match a friend's (Rocky Ausec) professional nostalgia funny car and then the Showbox Ford gets the 1:1 paint job.
Please jump in and speak up! I want to do a good job and get these babies on the shelf for show!

Well, I decided not to wait, since the wheels are already painted with a red anodized tint and I didn't want to pry them off and damage the suspension. I shot the mist coats and 3 full wet coats to the underside of the body last evening. I taped up the outside carefully and really tried my best. In spite of the booth and filterng system, a few knits of lint got stuck on the underside and so I'll follow my instructions on how to deal with it (got 3 mist and 3 wet coats with no runs!)
After carefull consideration, I've also decided no to paint the white portion on the lower 1/3 of the car and use the kit decals. Seeing that Billy Glidden, Bob's son has had a very successful career in NOS Mustang racing in the top class against turbo's and blowers, I've decided to dedicate this car to him. If I can get the custom decals made, the car will be all deep burgundy red with the logo Billy "the Kid" Glidden in white with black shadowing on each door and a "Reach for the sky" logo on the rear window. I hope to get a crew sticker to include Mom, Dad, and Billy for the rear trunk lid. There are plenty of salvagable sponsor stickers left or I'll scrounge for some. As soon as I get signed up to an alternate picture posting application, I'll create an album to post from here.
Man, another night right around freezing temps and prolly no more than in the low 40's today, I may just let the car dry another 24 hours before attempting to shoot the topside. Maybe I can put a couple mist coats of regular clear on the underside. Thanks to Skip and a lotta folks here for helping me understand this whole painting process and make a heck of a lot less mistakes!

Well Paul, I almost made it. Got the mist coats and 4 wet coats on. Got Firebird Designs to mock up my Billy the kid Glidden decals and the crew decal with me, my wife and my son instead. Even got totally brave and sanded out 4 dust nits I'd gotten tired of seeing buried, washed and dried it then shot a few light spots to cover up the lightened metallic surface.
It was 2 days dried and perfect. So what did I do? grabbed a can of 3-4 month (or older) clearcoat and sprayed the first of 3 mist coats. I had warmed can and shook it up. Either a tiny water droplet or a bubble came out right on the roof smileyCAELY0UD_zps3cc8a166; not only that, when I finished and examined the entire car, the driver's side had patches of what I'd describe as rough spots.
I sadly placed body on top of a cardboard box and covered it with a larger on to dry. I'll face the problem in a week or so.

Paul: there is definitely power in prayer! I have gotten over the Budweiser Ford fiasco and moved on to work on the Shoebox Ford and the Mustang funny car. Check the WIPs out for some interesting info

Hey friends! I so wish we still had photo upload capability here. The prostock is so close to done it isn't funny! The custom 'Billy "The Kid" Glidden' decals have been applied to both sides and "The Kid" (a spare one) has been applied at an angle across the hood! I've been using SLIXX mini-sheet letters/numbers/classes decals and Billy is PS 1.
The crew is on the decklid and the wing and 'chute are also attached. I've still got lots of detail to add with DZUS fasteners and a 'chute tag and lines.
I want to add that I've posted more than a few pics here of scattered build stages, but no finished work. The main reason for that is I discovered this addiction to plastic shortly after that painful purple Nova some of you remember that made it on here before the end of last summer. Then I kinda went crazy and got the Shoebox, the Ford prostock, and there are now 5 in progress altogether! Had it been a warmer winter, or had I been able to afford a paint booth sooner you may have seen more finished work. Regardless, it's been the support and advice (and yeah, the complements) that have made it possible to climb the ladder to more challenging work; for me, anyways.
So thanks everyone for sharing advice, missing or broken parts and in general being decent. Give yourselves a hearty round of applause! hand-clapping-smiley-emoticon

Somehow I'll find time to hook up w/Fokti or whatever but the good news is the T-bird is finished and not too shabby. Named after his lineage, Billy "The Kid" Glidden got the ride and has his custom decals on the side. Revvin' Red Testors paint, with basically the same sponsor decals as the original kit.
I really want to share it in pics as so many here have been supportive with my paint mishaps and learning curve.

Thanks guys! The build is complete and has custom decals too. I wish I could just post a single pic like the old days but with no server space, I have to do Fotki or something. I'm too busy (and lazy) to mess with 'em. PM me your email addys and I'll shoot you some from the Ford, a Kalitta type Mustang, a crazy promod McEwen f/c and a pro-mod '55 Chevy on the Shoebox Ford chassis!
BTW - sorry I missed these posts!
