Wanting to continue building a NASCAR kit, and also wanting to show that I can do MUCH better than my last build, (the Polar Lights Petty). I am going to build a match to my Kevin Harvick Rookie build. My first was his traditional "Rookie" colors, after he took over for the late, great Dale Earnhardt. This "Red Numbers" car is here in an older completed thread - and I built it as a "Raced Version". This build, I will build as race ready and new, only difference is I will utilize decals representing the "Black" numbers he ran in honor of Dale Earnhardt. This was Kevin's first race, and the first race after Dale Earnhardt's death - thus the Black numbers.

Found some additional "stock car goodies decals" I had, may need some of these, as well as a good year tire decal sheet. The original decal sheet looks a touch yellow, plus I used something from it, knowing I was going to do this black number car, so just in case the original decals do not work - I gots the backups! Got some parts pulled, sanded, gray paint flying. Body is under going sanding for primer and then will get a white satin coat.

Thanks to Ice for moving this thread to the correct section! Got some more paint flying on this, a lot of parts to be black, sprayed with the Krylon Fusion Satin Black. Love this stuff, leaves a great satin finish, and if you need it to be flat, slap a little dull coat on it. If you want it gloss, throw some future on it, otherwise, it works for dam near all black parts. Assembly to start pretty soon. Body and hood are gloss white and ready for paint and decals!!

Moving along slowly, lots and lots of painting details. WAY too many to bore with pictures, but here are a few... Engine coming along, combination of aluminum paint, and chrome silver paint, coated in future. I had to bend the plug wires and held them down with rubber bands overnight to stay in place, then added the valve covers, carb and air cleaner. Should have this wrapped up tomorrow night. Also got started on the front suspension, tires are ready for decals, dash is painted, not sure if I will decal the gauges or just hand paint them like I usually do. Firewall is painted and detailed, pedals on, getting prepared for roll cage assembly. Of course, tons of touch up on the engine and everywhere else to follow.

Appreciate that JK. I say start one up bud, never hurts to have one going along with something else! I usually keep a NASCAR kit going along with a couple other builds. I like the "relaxing" the NASCAR builds give me. Since I have built so many, I kind of have this "familiarity" with them if you will, so when other, unknown territory builds get to me, I can pull out an in progress NASCAR and it helps to calm the insides! LOL

Well - not so great news for an update.... Made some good progress on the tire decals, first sanded the backsides of the tires to remove the stamp in the rubber Then a good cleaning with rubbing alcohol and set them aside a bit to dry out good Time to decal, cutting out the decals can sometimes be as bad as applying them. I always start by putting the smaller "Eagle" ones on, then come back to apply the "GoodYear" Once the tires are decal-ed - then I let them dry just a few minutes before giving them a coat of dull coat Testors After a second coat of dull coat - the decals are set. I will probably give these a quick spray of gloss to give them a satin finish, but thats later down the line Got some more done on the roll cage - seat is in, gear shift, lots to go before touch ups Then jumped back to start decaling the body - hood and roof flaps... Then jumped to the hood - here is where the problems began to surface. the decals went on, but the GM part of the decal reacted to the clear coat. The hood pin decals are from a GM Goodies decal sheet, that's why they are a little nicer. Then, one of the hood pin decals came off, soooo... will have to put on another of these and re-clear. Hopefully I can salvage the strange reaction to the blue GM part of the decal Weird?? I also noticed the decal seems to have bled a little - this is scary, thinking they are old. The big roof 29 broke all apart on me, and the front end decal also cracked all to crap on me... Yep - I am certain this set of decals - from Slixx no less!! are to old to use.... I opened another set of the same style, black #29 decals from Slixx..... And the same dam problem happened, again, i am guessing these are simply to old to use... I have one more new set of these to try, if these do not work, it will be time to re-think the car I will be building. Bummer, but the car itself is ok, just having issues with decals, I may have to break down and order yet another set to see if they would be newer and would work

Those tyres turned out great mate, but the decal problem, that really sucks, this is what usually happens when i use decals, ( unless they are made by an expert on the subject.) smileyCA9464IN_zpsd9ee499f

LOL - expert? No way my friend. But this sure sucked, was not expecting this, but then again, they are old. And mo matter how well you seal them, sometimes this happens. I may have to start up a muscle car or something to just step away from this, LOL

Updates for tonight, I finished the hood pins decals, will still try to clean up the runs from the hood decal, possibly reapply the GM blue decal, and will re-clear coat I pulled out the third, and last set of decals I have for this build Laid the big roof number, then the front end. Not to worry for the front end grill area, as I have the goodies sheet to apply an additional grill cover for the end that pulled away Also applied the sides - showing the painted area, then after the decal was laid, a little touch up on the red lines, but again, the goodies sheet, and/or a piece of red line from one of the other decal sheets will work to fix these up - AT LEAST THEY ARE WORKING - LIKE SUPER YAY!!! And back to the tires - found some spare backs to pop in the front of the tire Then applied some decals to the insides of the tires, these represent, LF-4, RF-4, etc. I then pop in the rear tire backs, so i can spray these flat along with the tires. Better than cementing these in Give them a coat of dull cote clear And TADA - the rear tires are ready for a touch of Armor all, gloss, even pledge works to get them a satin finish Next up, the many decals to go on the rims, (front half of rims), plus lug nuts painting, centers, etc. NASCAR tires, to me, require tons of attention

Thanks mate - I am so glad this 3rd set is working. A little upset that I had (3) sets from Slixx, and only one so far is any good. BUT, it is, what it is. And what it is, is what I thought it is, and that is............ Now what was it I was saying?? smiley-scared002

Thanks Mike. Should have this done by spring I hope - no rush though, as it is just a side project. Especially since I jumped into the Feb MOTM and eBay build, BUT, I dabble here and there at it from time to time, LOL

Made some progress, well, you could say 2 steps forward, one step back - ugh... Anyways, I started to apply the rear decals. Well, apparently I was applying a touch too much pressure, (do ya think so - duh), and I heard and felt a CRACK!!! So, I attempted the repairs, glue, sanding, painting.... Well, its not matching the paint real well, AND these dam decals started to flake off! (I have not clear coated them yet - my bad I guess). I have more headlight decals, and lower front / side stripes. So I should be able to repair these as well. But with the paint not matching yet, I may have to turn this into a "Raced Version" as well, just to help hide the body flaws. I will try something else on the fender, but I bet a "Raced Version" this will be.... On the bright side, I do have the car itself just about there. The roll cage is about done, just the dash and some touch up to go. Engine is installed, rear end, rear shocks, springs, and exhaust are on, they actually lined up pretty nicely.

I know nothing about nascar, but in rally car racing they would just repair it using duct tape. Might be a way to hide the break/make a feature out of it as if it got broke and they thrashed all night to finish it for the race. A few greasy finger prints over the front to hide the colour mis-match might work too
