Thanks John! I used the butt end of a big xatco knife handle. I'll post pics later tonight of what I used and such.

I decided to shorten the bed so the wheelbase lines up, it's not perfect but it'll do lol. I want to try to add some weld beads and make it look like it was freshly welded. 20150329_010259 by ratrodfanbobcat, on Flickr 20150329_012048 by ratrodfanbobcat, on Flickr I'll have to shorten and add in the cab to bed filler piece later. I also got the first coat of paint on the frame. 20150329_012327 by ratrodfanbobcat, on Flickr Tomorrow I might try doing the salt method on the frame and I'll document so others can learn from my possible mistakes lol. Thanks for looking!

This is looking great so far Jesse! It's good to try new techniques and I'm glad to be able to follow along! The engine detail looks correct. I've done black washes on engines before but haven't used chalk afterwards. I think I'll try that on one of the projects I have on the bench! Looking forward to seeing more! hand-clapping-smiley-emoticon

Thanks Alan! It only took a couple minutes to apply the powder with a nice soft bristle brush and I plan on doing it much more often. I'm kinda getting bored with the super shiny just built kinda look and want some vehicles that look like they are driven lol. I'm gonna try and make it to a hardware store today to pick up something else to experiment with, so stay tuned!

Alright fellas, first pointer for this is to put water in a spray bottle with a drop of dish soap in it to break the surface tension of the water. I did not do this. I just ran it under the facet in the kitchen sink and shook some of the water off, then used a salt shaker and sprinkled on some salt lol. 20150329_205556 by ratrodfanbobcat, on Flickr 20150329_205610 by ratrodfanbobcat, on Flickr I'm painting it now and will let it dry over night. I'll take pics before and after I remove the salt. Thanks for looking!

Jesse, That salt method looks GREAT, but I thought you were gonna use the "salt" as frame rust "scale". If that makes sense..... BUT I take it the salt when your all said and done, will rub off in some areas and not in others to look like rust scale, right? At least thats how I've done it on the trains when I did it, on steel windows and such in industrial buildings. Even steel bridge work and all..... I'm tuned right in to see how you go about this and what ways you use or done use.... popcorn-and-drink-smiley-emoticon

Well John, not so pro tip number 2 is don't use very much water lol. There's a lot of places I can't get the salt off, it was so wet it turned into a mineral rock lol. I'll play with it more tomorrow, had to finish up building a dog house for my mutt tonight.

That engine looks great Jesse, top job on the weathering mate, and the chassis is coming along nicely too.

Thanks Dale! This isn't much of an update, but it's progress non-the-less lol. I got my rust coating system Tuesday and painted the manifolds and transmission of the engine. 20150402_212440 by ratrodfanbobcat, on Flickr Turns out the stuff I bought is sophisticated finishes lol. This is after the metallized dried for 2 days, tonight a applied the first coat of the rusting solution. I tried another experiment, the jury is still out on this one... 20150402_212400 by ratrodfanbobcat, on Flickr It's a minwax furniture marker, basically stain in a paint marker. This is after 2 coats. How do you guys think it looks?

It looks great Jesse! Is the bed wood to start with? I use a lot of Miniwax products on the doll furniture I build. It's a good thing to let it really dry good. Then you can clear coat it with anything if you want to. You don't have to but it makes a big difference. I didn't know they were making those markers I'll have to look into that. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Dennis! That is the original gray plastic kit piece. I didn't prime it or anything. I think there are cheaper furniture markers out there, but small town lumber yards don't carry much lol.

If that's wood grain kit plastic the marker did a fantastic job on it. Looks like real wood. I'm going to look for Miniwax markers. Thanks Jesse.
