it seems that it's a common thing, we built as kids/teens, then fell off the plastic map, then jumped on board again. so what brought you back?
for me, it was a combo of impending boredom [winter], and the thoughts of a single big rig livestock trailer I knew I had in the attic. the trailer belonged to my grandfather, who passed away in '04, he also sold GMC rigs for years, so that was the impetus that got the fire lit for me again. my plan is/was to get the skills back/learn new ones, and build the livestock trailer and a GMC Astro 95 as a tribute to him in my own little way.
what's your story?

I started kits in middle school I wanna say building mostly lowriders. Lol. Don't ask. Then as I went I to high school, I notice girls and 1:1 cars so I stopped building. When I moved out of my moms, I even told her to throw away everything model related. I regret that now. When my son was 11 or 12, a camaro kit for Christmas. We build it together. Since my son was living in Albuquerque at the time, I thought it was a great way to spend the weekends together. As time went by, he also started to notice girls as well. Not to mention video games. The amount of time we spent on the bench decreased as I also joined him to play some video games. We would split our time in front of the big screen and at the bench. He lost interest and from time to time will help me with something I'm building. He just turned 16 last week and I'm the kid still building these kits at the bench. Haha! With my stash, I don't think I'll be quitting again (knock on wood) if all goes well.

I started building when I was 8 years old. I had a bone deterioration disease in my hip that required surgery and braces, and when I was in the hospital my dad brought me my first model. I remember it was a GTO, I think a '71 or '72, molded in a funky yellow/gold color. That was the beginning. Next couple years was physically restricted, so I started building a lot of models. Even after I was able to get out and run with the other kids again, I kept building models. Then when high school came around the building started to slowly taper off losing out to girls and 1:1 cars. Still built 2 or 3 a year though. Then marriage and kids. Total model building shut down. When my sons started showing an interest in models I jumped in and encouraged it, even starting a couple myself and building with them. Their interest soon waned and I put my unfinished builds away. Now 41 years from the beginning, I wanted to build a model, or maybe a couple, for how I want to do a 1:1 Corvette I acquired, that needs total rebuilding, to experiment in an affordable way, to try some custom touches I want to do and have a 3D concept of how it will look and if I would like it. That was the beginning of the end. I realized that, although this hobby has got more expensive than I remember, it was still much, much cheaper than building real cars and trucks. With models I can build all the cars I want to build, instead of only one or two real ones. I still have a couple 1:1 projects, but the model building will help relieve the creative mayhem and overload that can build up in my fragile little brain. The problem now is that I can buy stuff I couldn't as a kid. Six months ago I only had 6 or 7 kits that I had started and never finished. Now I have 200ish kits and can't seem to stop picking up more. Also been setting up with tools and supplies I couldn't do when I was younger. Oh, and I started messing with making molds and resin casting. Not sure where that is going. So I think I am back into this until the end now. I really enjoy it and realize how much I missed it.

I have been building off and on since i was about 10 ( man I would love to have all those kits again ) I never really stopped, I built while at college, I built while stationed in Germany, I built while my three daughters grew up and I still build now. Oh sure things have come and gone and I took breaks hear and there to get married or build real cars but like a fist love I always come back. Hell I hope someone has the guts to slip a kit and some glue in my coffin, so i can build in Hell !! LOL !!

Well I am a lot like you guys started building at about age 6 after I went into my neighbors room older guy and he had model planes hanging from his ceiling man I was hooked. He kinda mentored me and I did tons of planes and military stuff. As I got older though really got into 1:1 cars my first car was a Duster 340 I dragged raced. Then as you guys life consumed my hobby drive. Then at about age 42 just went into a Hobby shop that had a huge slot-car track well I got the bug again and started racing 24Th scale slot cars...wifey really thought I went nuts. I was competing all over the state of California and even a few otta state contests. It got too expensive so dropped back into building models again, then at age 52 got hit by disability and wasn't even walking for 2 months. Finally got to where I could walk again but nothing else. Lost my ability to play golf which I loved, tennis, racket ball...all gone. Went into a deep depression and then started building again and it really helped pull me out of my funk. So still can't build sitting up just too painful so I have to build lying down off the end of my bed. Got connected with on line clubs through Iceman ( THANK YOU ICE !!) so that's been my connection to the world again since I'm pretty much at home. Still into 1:1 and have had about 35 different muscle cars so that gets me out some. I love to build and fellowship with other guys like you all it really keeps me sane and I appreciate everyone's encouragement. It's more to me than just building a model it's a culture group of guys and gals that like to share their ART WORK. So glad to be here ICE and Beast have done a great job with the forum so hope it keeps growing to a place where folks encourage each other and grow and share. Blessings to all JP

speaking of sanity, I find it ironic that when I am at work all I think about is getting home to glue plastic together. it's ironic, because I am a tech at a chevy dealer, so all day, in a way, I am dealing with a big model--i'm taking stuff apart, [usually fixing it, lol], then putting all the parts back together, sorta like building a model. work 'puzzles' stress me, so what do I do in my spare time? build more puzzles....I am nuts....hehe.....
sad part is, I can build an automatic trans faster than I can build a 1/25th scale big rig...........

Like a lot of other folks, I started modeling as a kid, back in the mid/late 50's. Started with planes and ships and gravitated over to cars. When I left home in 1964 (U.S. Army)I stopped modeling for a long time. After a while I did a few off and on. I tried to get my 3 boys interested but that was a lost cause so I gave it up again. After retiring from the Army and starting a new career in corrections plus working full time at another job, there just wasn't time for any hobbies. So fast forward a few years and I decided to get back into the hobby. This time with a little more time and patience, plus a little more money to spend. I did a few builds but had to stop again due to vision problems. Those have been corrected now and I can see better so I'm back to modeling again. Now that I'm retired completely I have much more free time to enjoy the hobby I love so much. I have done a lot of builds over the years (wish I still had them)but only have about 25 or so left. I do however have a few parts in a box that somehow survived the last 50 years. Mostly grilles and rear bumpers and a few engines.
