what're you all using to hold/organize your little glass bottles of paint? I have one of those carousel things, but it doesn't hold enough jars, and now the labels are so damn small, you can't read the colors without picking them up. so what do you use, or what have you made to accommodate these little buggers?

Hey tbill, here's what I have on my bench. I made it a few months ago. It pretty much stays out of the way because it's long. Not too difficult to make. Also holds some of my bigger little jars and bottles. I got the idea off a magazine. Let me see if I can find the article. Hope it helps.

well, I may have found a solution. I was going to build a thing like Ice has, but was at wally world and found an interesting 'holder'. it's designed for holding spools of thread, but I temporarily rigged it up to see how it would work for paint. I think if I end up liking it, I will modify it a bit. what do ya think?

That's a pretty darn good idea there tbill. My wife has a few of these in her sewing palace at the other end of the house. Hhhmmmm, I wonder if she would miss one or two,...naw, I like those warm meals and not having to test the food on the dog before I eat it.

I don't have a pic, but what I use are those stackable plastic tubs from W-M. They are about 6" wide x 10" long x 3" deep, and come in a set that stacks 3 tubs deep. They snap together, and the top one has a lid with a handle so you can grab all three and mive them out of the way if need be. Each bin will hold 28 of the round 1/2 oz jars or 40 of the 1/4 oz sqare jars. The 1/2 oz jars leave a gap on the long side of the bin, which I find is a good place to store extra brushes and other spare tools.
I have to agree about the labels these days. I don't know if the print is gettig smaller or my arms are getting shorter, but I need my cheaters to read them anymore. This bombined wit my storage technique makes it hard to find the color I am looking for. So what I did was get a pack of the round price tag type stickers from W-M. I write the color on the sticker and put it on the jar lid. This works ok, but they do tend to fall off some times. One other thing I do is to paint the top of the lid with the color in that jar. It doesn't help in finding a color by name, but when you're just looking for the right shade, it can save some time

ghost, that's why I like this set up in a way, I can actually see the color in the bottle. only issue so far has been picking out the silver from the steel and flat aluminum, lol. I was thinking of deleting the 'posts' for the thread, and adding a small strip of wood across the front of each 'shelf' to keep the bottles on it. I've got some of the small stackable bins, but digging thru them drove me nuts.

It may be a form of OCD, but I use the rainbow method to store my paints in the bins. Currently I have 3 of the bins full - 2 with round 1/2 oz jars (56 jars), and one with the square 1/4 oz ones (54 jars - I miscalculated the capacity when I first mentioned them). I have my most commonly used colors in these bins, with spares and off the wall colors in a separate box. I start by putting in the reds, then oranges, yellows and so on. After the 6 basic colors, I do the browns, then white, grey, black. The last ones in are the metals (still grouped by gold, silver, bronze, copper, etc.).
I bought a 2nd set to get he extra lid. Now I have a stack of 4 of the 6 (the bottom one has my mitre box, saws and some other junk. Next up and just set into (stacked) the bottom bin are the 1/4 oz square bottles, and set ito that is bin #2 of my round bottles. The 2nd lid is on this bin. Sitting on top of that lid is bin #1 of my round jars with the other lid on them.
Now all the sorting when putting them in, and having the stacked bins might sound like a hassle, but by putting things back where I got them, I soon remembered that bin one goes thru the purples, and bin 2 has the browns, white-grey-blacks, and the metals. It may not be the system for everyone, but it works for me.
