I am so mad at myself right now, but I just couldn't have known. I don't understand! So I have a Subaru body, painted with Tamiya semi-gloss black rattle can. I finally decided to apply the Duplicolor clear coat finish today to two bodies. The vette I'm working on and this one. The vette looks smooth as glass with the clear coat. What happened next with the Subaru left me shocked. The pictures speak for themselves.
Can anyone explain the science behind this?? What on earth happened to the semi gloss black coats? I should also add I used a rattle can of Tamiya metallic blue for the vette, and it came out sparkling. It looks almost like the plastic has been eaten up. I could soak it in brake fluid and start over. Part of me just wants to pitch it and buy the part. Super disappointed..

That's definitely a chemical incompatibility issue. Possibly acrylic versus synthetic or one of these versus straight lacquer? The Duplicolor is probably acrylic lacquer and the Tamiya semi-gloss black a synthetic lacquer or straight lacquer?

It doesn't say on the paint cans, but the clear coat is acrylic.

Like Skip says, compare your 'vette cans vs your Suby cans. If it don't say enamel or laquer specifically, I don't use it! I only use compatible (same) chemical combinations. Since I shoot Testors One Shot laquer (for now) and one shot Clear Gloss, I'm not worried. Tell us what combo you used with the 'vette if you can! Sorry for the Suby. Try and soak it in Purple Power or Yellow top Easy Off!

I have had the same thing painting plastic bumpers on 1:1 scale cars. What I had to do was just keep making sure my surface was prepped properly and I added flex additive and fish eye eliminator. Probably not the best ideas but they worked. As far as the 1:25 scale models go I have had similar problems but they all happened with metallics, specifically Testors black metallic and green metallic. When that happened to me I ended up getting frustrated, stripped the car, and then it was doomed to my Junkyard of Misfit Models.
