Hi all I know very little about rc cars (built several ships)
I've convinced my missus to get it for me for my 65th birthday jadlam do a bundle which includes everything to get it running for 196 quid, are there any problems with the kit, will it be too fast for a complete newbie, how easy are cars to control (ships, or the type I've built tend to be slow and so very easy to control) how robust are they (ships tend to be quite fragile)

I am relatively new to RC cars as well. I first read about RC no prep drag racing about 6 years ago and thought it could be something I could do when I couldn't work on one of my 1:1 scale cars. My first car was a Traxxas Slash 2 wheel drive electric truck. I used it to bash around a little bit to get the hang of it, then I started collecting the parts to turn it into a drag car. Once I got it together, had the new body painted and everything, I ran the car into my 1:1 car's wheel and shattered the body. Got another body shell and then bought the Traxxas Drag Slash which is basically the same thing I already built but comes from the factory that way. Both cars are fun, haven't had a chance to race anyone else yet, just doing some test hits in parking lots.
I am not familiar with the exact car in the title, but I know Tamiya makes good stuff. Are you getting a LiPo battery or NiMH battery? My cars use the NiMH batteries. Not as fast as LiPO but I have seen videos where LiPO can catch fire. NiMH seems to be a bit more forgiving.

The battery in the bundle is a lithium

Lithium batteries will make the car run faster for sure. That's what all of the racers use. I would recommend getting some kind of battery box or bag to store the battery in. The hobby store should have something. I would also recommend reading up on the storage process for those batteries. I have read up on them in the past but have always used NiMH batteries so I don't have first hand knowledge. I did a quick search to see if I could find the articles I have read in the past about LiPO batteries. This one has some information about lithium battery safety. hobbyking.com/en_us/blog/lipo-battery-safety-101-a-guide
