So with the Wheel contest ending last month and the great turn out, I'd like to issue out another challenge to you guys. For now this is to get an idea of how many of you are interested. As the title says it, it would be a resin build contest. Still havent typed up the rules but here are a few key points for the contest:
- Needs to be a new build
- Progress pics along the way
- 3 months from start to finish (appx mid Oct - mid Jan)
- Body needs to be resin - any extras a plus
- Any type of vehicle would be accepted
- You'd have to supply your own parts this time around
- Another great resin prize package yet to be determined
Let me know if youre interested and I will add you to the list. Will give you until Sunday night. Will work on some rules in the meantime.
Here are the members that will be joining so far:
- GrandpaBeast
- IceMan555
- Skip-O-Matic
- CustomMuscle

Too young in the modeling craft for me to do resin, but this is a great idea and I'll definitely vote!

I'm probably going to kick myself in the posterior for this later, but yes, I would get in on this. I have had my eye on some resin bodies and this would push me into getting one and getting it done.

Sounds like a great idea but my build rate these days almost assures me that it won't be finished that soon! But if I can come up with a project that I may be able to get done in a short time I might be willing to try it. I'll be looking for more details soon.

I think Iceman has come up with yet another great idea ( crazy , but great ) !And being resin the extra time will be needed. Maybe we wait till Nov to start it off and give everyone a full three months ( nov, dec, and jan )! I am going to start checking out bodies now !!!!

Looks like we have a contest! We have at least four people signed up. Hopefully we get a few more once the rules are typed up which I'm working on right now. Will take Beast's recommendation and go from Nov 1st through Jan 31st.

Can't help you out on any of those donors CM. I do have my choices narrowed down to three now though. I have donor kits already for two of them. What to do, what to do,...hhhmmmmmmm. I'll figure it out over the weekend.

When you guys say donor kits, you're just referring to the kit you'll harvest parts from for your resin body, correct?

Yes that's correct Schwack some guys pop out resin bodies that you can't get in kits but there are kits which can be used for the rest of the build.

Are they special kits designed for resin builds? Or can I buy a resin body, say a camaro, and just get a Revell camaro kit or something like that?

Yup schwack, Usually the resin body is meant to go on a Revell, AMT, Polar Lights, etc., kit that is your donor for the chassis and other parts.

Also, most resin kits are made using a specific kit as a body donor and then it's modified over and over until the maker is happy with the final product.
So what does this mean? Most resin body makers will suggest a donor kit for you to work with, but you'll have to purchase separately. I mean it's not going to fit right in like it does with a normal kit. You'll have to do a lot of sanding and cutting on the donor parts to get it where it needs to be. It's a lot of fun and one of the biggest learning experiences you ever have with plastic kits.
I think that once you can make a donor kit fit into a resin body you can pretty much do any other modification to plastic.

Sounds like a big step up. I'll see how the big boys do it in the contest first.

Big boys? I don't know about the others, but this will be my first one. Then again I have always been a fool and dived head first into things where I didn't know what I was doing. I tend to learn my biggest lessons that way and quicker too. I have no idea how this is going to turn out, it may get really ugly here in my little shop horrors before it's all over with.

Did you wash it real good? I use Wesley's bleach white to scrub it. Too many chemicals.

Like IceMan said, wash it REAL good. Sonds like it still has mold release on it, and until you get that stuff off, ain't nothn' gonna stick to it.

Yup and don't sand it super smooth. You want something for the primer or base coat to hold on to.
