Has anyone heard of ugears? They make these really neat wooden model kits. My brother in law has a couple that he built and they all have some kind of function to them. He has a locking safe and a Hurdy Gurdy (not 100% sure what that is but from the looks of it a Hurdy Gurdy is some kind of guitar like instrument). This year for Christmas he got a roadster for me. So far I have built the engine, complete with moving pistons, and the steering gear. This thing will be so cool when I get it finished. From the video on their website not only will it steer from the steering wheel but I can move the gear selector into a forward gear, neutral, and reverse. If you want to try something a little different check them out at www.ugears.us. I'll take some pictures and show you guys when I get it a little closer to complete.

UPDATE: I installed the mechanism for winding up the car and something is sticking. Not sure what yet because everything seems to move freely on its own. I'll tear into it a little when I get the chance but so far I am really enjoying this and it is a nice change of pace. Still love plastic models but this is fun too.

So I was able to free up some moving parts. They give you toothpicks to use as axles for gears and if they axle comes out of the hole, the gear moves instead of turning. That can bind up. Still not moving like it should, I may need to back track a bit to make it work properly. 20190107_202050 by John Keim, on Flickr 20190107_202046 by John Keim, on Flickr This is what I have so far. Can't go much further yet because I broke a couple pieces trying to press them out of the wood tablet and have ordered replacements. But this is a video of what it should be when finished:

still can't quite get this thing to run like I feel it should. My wife is due with our baby in less than 2 weeks and after the baby is born my brother in law said he wanted to come out to meet his niece or nephew. I'll have him look at the Roadster with me and see what he might recommend.

So after having my brother in law out to visit, we took a look at my model car and it ran fine while he was here. After he left I started to have issues with it binding up again. While here he said to me "hey even if it doesn't operate as it should, you will still have a cool looking model" So I continued with the build. After a few nights and some sore finger tips I got it done. 20190226_112548 by John Keim, on Flickr 20190226_112557 by John Keim, on Flickr This is the open hood showing the engine. The pistons will move if I wind up the spare tire on the back. 20190226_112605 by John Keim, on Flickr Doors open, steering wheel turns the front wheels, and the gear selector in the middle will put it in forward gear, neutral, or reverse. And the pedals dictate a high or low speed. 20190226_112609 by John Keim, on Flickr I showed my dad this morning who was amazed. He asked where he could get one so he could build one. I will definitely be getting more because it is a nice break from plastic models. On top of that, because there is no paint or glue, I can take it wherever I want in the house and can still watch the little one while I build. And no mess to clean up!
