So I guess I'm going to jump in on this Graffiti contest. I have decided on the Corvette that sits in front of Mel's most of the night. It is either a 1959 or 1960. If I can manage to get a pic of it, I will post it for reference. It's custom with a lot of the trim shaved, flared wheel openings, hard top covered in black vinyl, custom tail lights, and a hood scoop. Appears to be white metalflake with blue metalflake stripes. Can't see exactly what the wheels are so I will be guesstimating going by what would be era correct. I can't seem to get my screen capture to work so I can grab an image of it or I would have a pic for ya's.

That's it Grandpabeast. Thanks. AK, one of my thoughts was to go with chrome reverse wheels, as that was pretty popular for that era. There isn't a decent side shot of the car to get a good look at the wheels, but they look to me to possibly be aluminum, and maybe are five slots or torque thrust D wheels? I can't remember how early those may have been available and if they would be right for the era. I have to do some research

Research is an important part of building accurate models. back in the day I had stacks and stacks of reference material. internet has made research so much better! AK

I own a set of torque thrust D's and the the stamp date on them is 1960...I know this because I was trying to order new center caps and the guy asked me for the date as the caps changed over the years. I say if you cant see them then use what ever you like as long as it fits the era ! I will keep looking for pictures or info on that car.

I guess I should post an update so you guys know I am actually doing something on this. Bear with me as this may get a little long winded. Been doing research and what not to try and build this as close as I can to the one in the movie. There are a couple things I am going to have to take some artistic freedom on, due to the fact there just isn't any way to clarify certain details, but the ones I can confirm I am adhering to. I chose to use the Revell 1960 Corvette "Skips Fiesta" kit as it is better scaled and detailed than the AMT 1959 Corvette that I also have on the shelf. I noted from a movie shot that they had removed the speedo pod from the dash, only using the tach, oil, temp, amp, and fuel gauges. The Revell kit has a separate speedo pod that I can just leave off to accomplish that detail. The only pain with the Revell kit is the body is 5 pieces that have to be glued together. Yes this did cause the blurting of unsavory words a couple times. The Revell kit also does not come with any kind of roof, so I am using a hardtop from an AMT '57 Corvette Gasser kit. The movie car's hardtop is covered in black vinyl, so that will be something new for me to do, luckily I have an article about how to accomplish it. I also decided to put a 409 with 2x4 barrel carbs and 4 speed trans, just haven't decided on which intake yet though. I decided to use Torque Thrust wheels on it also. I also noted that they had put scoops on top of the rear fenders like the 1964 Corvette Grand Sports had. They resemble the scoops on top of the '56-'57 front fenders. I made some quickie molds from a '57 body I have, to make scoops to put on my rear fenders. Here are some pics of that process. Built clay dams around each scoop to pour silicon for the molds. The silicon poured into the dams. Pulling them off after the silicon has cured. A scoop pulled out to be trimmed as needed and one still in the other mold.

Way to go Skip! I think it's great that you're doing research to try and get the model as close to the movie car as possible! I've built several movie cars recently and think that getting the details as close as you can is the fun of such projects! This is going to be an awesome build! AK

Thanks guys! Gotta get back busy on this one. A lot of mods to do to this one and time is getting really short. Now that the December MOTM is out of the way I can concentrate on this one more. Hope to have some more progress posted very soon.

Here's a quick update. After checking fit of body to chassis and tire/wheel clearance, and getting placement of the 409 going in, I glued styrene strips to the wheel openings to make a base for the wheel flares I'm doing. These strips are about 2 or 3 times bigger than what will eventually take shape. After the glue has dried, I will cut these back, and fill with putty where need be, to start shaping the flares. Oh yeah, I have also shaved the side moldings and filled all the rear bumper holes and exhaust ports in the rear at this point also. Here are a few pics of the strips in place.

Well guys, I think I am going to have to admit temporary defeat on this build and drop out of this contest. After some analysis of my available time and scheduling, and dealing with several issues on this build, I won't be able to finish it in time. So, I'm shelving it until I get over the urge to take multiple blows to it with an axe. Need to get busy on the other builds that I am committed to for contests here that I am getting behind on, because this one has been stealing all the time resources I have. I will finish this, but it will be later when I get more time to deal with it. I will start another thread on it when I do.
