Hey all,
Been trying to work on a model here and there when I have time and have a question. I like to do my builds as accurate as I can and am working on a 78 Chevy. I'm trying to figure out the factory engine color. As far as I can tell it should be blue. As I search I see 78 Chevy small blocks should be either real, medium blue, or dark blue. Anyone clarify this for me?

UPDATE
I asked a friend who is a fellow Gbody Junkie who also happens to have the 305 he took out of his Monte Carlo. He said it was a light blue similar to the early Pontiac blocks. So, what he said was up through 1976 all Chevy small blocks were orange. From 1977-1981 they were this light blue. From 1982 on they painted them black. Surprisingly I'm told the reason GM went to black engine blocks is the black helped dissipate the heat generated by the internal combustion. I would have thought black would have held that heat in and absorbed it. Oh well, that's why GM doesn't pay me big dollars to make those decisions!

I thought it was interesting as well. I know i don't get incredibly detailed in my builds but sometimes I like to have them as accurate as I can make them. The build in question I am wanting to look like it rolled off the showroom floor. The engine color has been difficult because every internet search I did came back with different results. The blue that GM used on the Chevys could have been anything from robin's egg blue to turquoise based on the results I got. I'm just glad I know a guy who loves G-bodys and had that engine laying around.
