Hey gang I have a question. When ever I attend a model contest , win or lose I like to talk to the judges after and get their opinions of my builds. I think this goes a long way to building winning models. So heres my question.
in an attempt to better my building I would like to hear from you , my friends, judges and the best builders on the web. What things do you see that I need to improve upon ? Now I want honesty, feel free to look at my builds and use them as examples. I know this will help to make me a better builder.
As with all things time is important and I have been working more then I wish. Also I am going to dig out the air brush and see if my eyes and hands can work together.
Thank you to anyone who answers, I really appreciate it.

wow.... I need to get here a lot more!! I am surprised you don't have any replies to this.
so, I will give you my opinion. to me, first and foremost, I do not put any of my builds in shows because I don't finish them. now, winning a model contest is based on a few things..
1) reputation. its as simple as that. lots of people vote based off of a name. if you have a rep of building good models, you will get credit right off the bat. true story, we have a very good builder around here, well known in these parts, has built box cover cars and been in full blown magazine articles. just for kicks, he build a model that was not complete, nowhere near his standards, he took 2nd with it.
2) cash. how mush aftermarket stuff can you put on a build, whether it belongs there or not.
3) location of show. this one is tricky, usually the bigger the show, the more chance your build will be overlooked, (see #1). good mid sized shows are really nice. and in my experience, nothing wrong with them, but stay away from IPMS shows. they are military based and sometimes don't really know what they are looking at in car model building.
4) luck. sometimes you are just at the right show at the wrong time.
now, to your models. there are nothing wrong with your builds. I think they are well executed, well thought out and very clean. the problem is, some people just have a flair for building exceptional models. so, I think you are there, you just have to refine your builds just that much more. here, this is a build from a well known guy, known for his musclecars, there is about $20 of aftermarket stuff (6 pack, wheels and tires from fireball, paint from gravity and decals from Keith Marks), but this guys building technique is just extraordinary. here is a kit that builds ut nice, but far from perfect, he has a way of just making it look really nice. negatives, he did not putty the hood scoop to the hood, therefore seeing seems, did not put the exhaust tops on and there are some mold lines showing, but his build is so nice, you don't notice those things unless that is what you are looking for.
sorry for the long post, just thought I would give you my honest opinion about show, your builds and other builds. here is the super bee....

David, I do not want to pick your models apart. I really don't like judging, but when I do the first thing I look for are the basics. Are the mold lines sanded off; are the tires all touching the ground; any glue marks etc. Next is realism. Are the plug wires to scale; if it's suppose to be a period correct build does it have the correct era parts etc. I have seen models on contest tables that had a ton of photoetched parts that were poorly exacuted and really detracted from the overall model. Of coarse everyone's favorite: paint-first off all paint jobs should be smooth, but does the paint look correct for the build? Factory stock builds and daily drivers should NOT be polished to show car "mile deep" looking paint jobs. All this ( to me at least ) seems like the basics, but what really starts setting a model car apart from the rest are just suttle touches that don't really jump out at you, but just add a "just right" look. Sanded tire tread, a small silver dot on a bolt head that isn't suppose to be painted, slight color differances between the engine pulleys and the fan belts, and such. Hope this helps.

I've seen what you guys are talking about at the shows. We've got these 3 guys who come up from Mexico every year and the sweep the contest with awards............every time. Now they are decent but I've seen better on the tables. One of them puts a professionally made binder with all the progress photos in it right next to the completed build that is on a turntable. He wins.........every time. Something else I've noticed is that his subjects are right on target with a lot of the judges interests...........particularly if they are younger judges.

Thanks for the in put Tubbs no problem Beast. just one mans opinion. like AK said, I will not pick your models apart, rather give you some of the things I look for in "top notch" or "show winning" builds. right now. the way things are going, learn to weather, that seems to be the #1 thing now. with rat rods all the rage and all. other things, if you detail, make sure your stuff is of realistic size, nothing worse than 6" diameter roll cages or 4" plug wires. make sure to keep things in scale. lots of stupid stuff like make sure your steering wheel in off the seat, if you open up a trunk or door, take the extra time to make the trunk floor have no gaps from it to the body, put door sills in, just make it the way it should be. I have seen wires come from and go to stuff it shouldn't, nitrous bottles with no lines to the motor, but every other line under the sun.... you get my drift....
