Me and some of my buddies (fellow builders) have been thinking of ways we can have competitions with the model cars we build (we build a lot of junkers). I was thinking of maybe building some to roll and maybe having some down hill races just for strawberrys and giggles? Anyone ever done this? Just curious if anyone else has done anything like this or has any other ideas on ways to have fun with model cars other than just building them! Crazy huh?

Sounds interesting. I know I've seen people put motors in them and make them into slot cars and stuff. My personal models are just for display. I know I'll never afford all the ones I love, so I buy models to surround myself with the cars I love. To me, an artist, they are as much a form of art as a painting or a statue. Plus, it's nice to have them around to explain things to your friends when you talk cars. I just go to the shelf grab the car and start talking. The main goal of my collection is to have every single model of every muscle car. I also want a few car examples from the earlier years of car production as well.
As for other ideas for you; maybe dioramas? Use them in a film project?

I'm the typical boring guy with my completed builds. All of my builds go in my almost near dustproof display cabinet and STAY there except for taking out for shows. The good news is that I've still got 5 of mine from 35ish years ago.

I never blew mine up either. in face I was the geek who first begged the kids to give it to me instead of blowing it up, well, that never worked, so I ran around gathering up all the parts afterwards. yea, as a kid we used to have drag raced with them over a buddy's house. his driveway was on a hill. what sucked is the older kids who were into slot cars at the time, used slot car wheels and tires which made the car roll better and heavier. they always won, took home the trophy and the girls. I hated those kids.

I belong to a local club (KKIM) and one of the contests we have are the Gravity Drags. It is much like pine wood derby. We have a custom built , wooden track and a pillow catch at the end. Three classes Stock, Modified and outlaw. I have only ever been in the outlaw class so I dont no much about the modified. But in the out law I would use a snapfast, replace the wheels with thin steel washers, after crazy gluing the snapfast together I would then drill a hole in the roof so I could fill it with bbs . Outlaw had no weight class like modified. Mine weighed several pounds when filled. after about four rounds of racing the axles would start to bend. stock was just that stock. Modified was stock but you could add weight ( just dont remember how much ) and outlaw was anything goes . Ill post some pics of my two cars ASAP

ok, going to post some of the car pics and a rough drawing of the track. You will see from the drawing there is nothing to guide the cars down the track. The first year I won with the truck. I used snapfast kits because less pieces and I could super glue the whole thing together. You will notice the plug in the roof, that is where I poured in the BBs. The truck weighed about three and a half maybe four pounds. I used washers for wheels as my thinking was less contact = less drag. An the washers added weight. The truck did how ever slam back and forth all the way down. So the next year ( win #2 )I built the car, again snapfast, super glue and bbs. Washers for wheels and this time i added two small wheels in either end of the bumper. I dont know if it really helped but the wheels did spin and keep the body off the walls. The track was made from 1x10x8' pine with side walls and a center wall. three sections that could be separated for moving. workbench 007 by David Keim, on Flickr workbench 009 by David Keim, on Flickr workbench 010 by David Keim, on Flickr workbench 011 by David Keim, on Flickr workbench 012 by David Keim, on Flickr workbench 013 by David Keim, on Flickr workbench 014 by David Keim, on Flickr workbench 015 by David Keim, on Flickr

I remember doing the gravity drags. They were a ton of fun. If I remember correctly, the classes were different weights. Stock had to use s box stock model and weigh no more than 8oz. The Modified class I think could weigh up to 16oz. The outlaw class just needed to have a model for the base. I remember seeing one that a guy cut the wings off a jet and had this super long, super aerodynamic racer. I built 2 over the years. My first was an open wheeled car (think of something like a Prowler). The problem was the rubber tire hit the wall and brought my car to a screeching halt. The next racer I built was similar to GB's. I used a Ford GT90 and I painted the glass black, left interior out, and filled it with BB's. That car was fast but it was so heavy that when it hit the finish line it exploded and BB's went everywhere. Gravity drags were a lot of fun and I'd love to do it again. I have also watched videos on slot cars with 1/24 scale model cars. I'd like to learn how to do that too.

When I was a kid some of us would go to a friends who had a steep driveway that led to a busy two lane street. We would oil up the axles so they rolled really good dowse them with lighter fluid and race them down the drive into traffic!(looked real cool at night!LOL) Now I have about 50 in plastic cases on the wall and about another 30+ built in their boxes in the closet along with another 40+ that aren't started. P.S. we stopped rolling them into the street after a guy got a metal axle in his tire!
