How many people here use an airbrush to paint their models? Or do most of you still use spray cans? I still use cans but noticed the collection I am beginning to accumulate. I have been thinking about getting an airbrush and compressor. I think I want a gravity fed airbrush, I learned to paint 1:1 scale cars with a gravity HVLP gun. I have an old Testor's siphon fed but I don't care for it, can't seem to get it set up right. Anyone have any suggestions?

I still use rattle cans for about 85% of my work. If its a fast build I use cans but if I have the time to lay down a custom job I will break out the air brush. I have found that the air source or compressor is very important you need adjustable air pressure and you need it to stay constant. I think I have a mix of air brushes but the one I use most is a badger two step. One thing to try is practice on some junker bodies and try different things see what works best for you and then clean up everything really good.

Thanks I appreciate all the input. I recently started following a guy on YouTube who builds and rates model kits. He built a Ford Raptor that looked like a real car when he was done and used an airbrush. I thought it might help advance my skill set.

Yep - you tube is an awesome source. I have watched TONS of air gun tips.
I have yet to really get into it, as I have such a huge supply of rattle cans still, but I do plan to really start using it this year

Have used the air brush for 25+ years, if you do it, do it properly, get a good brand airbrush, my Passche has lasted over 25 years, also a compressor with a good size tank. And all your cans will still be a great source of paint, as you can decant them as you need them.

I always have used rattle can. The only air brush I have is the old Testors one that uses the canned propellant and it is still new in the box!LOL The problem with enamels is due to the EPA the stuff takes forever to dry (if it ever really does) and if you don't use the rest within a year it gets thick and doesn't spray worth a crap even heated up! Started using Lacquers now when I can but it limits you on colors.

I dread the idea of cleaning one. I think a gravity feed is the way to go, but I've never used one.

I guess I will jump in, I used both, I use cans now, too lazy to bust out the 5 or 6 year old brand new Aztec gun I have. getting closer to using it though. when I had my passche gun, even a crappy paint job was better than the rattle can garbage I am getting now. yea, sounds funny but painting is my demon. can't get a good paint job to save my life. cleaning is no problem, just a little hassle, once you do it enough, it's easy-pezy. you just cant get the paint job from a can like you do from a gun.

That's kind of what I was thinking, I've painted with a gun on a 1:1 scale car and it seemed to come out pretty good. Really just want to step my game up when it comes to building models. I saw a video where this guy painted a Ford Raptor and the car looked like it was on the show room floor. Had you not seen him hold the shell in his hand you would have never guessed it was a model. That is what I will strive for.
