cool prize Tom! I parted out the last one of these I had by mistake. ( I thought I still had one left) But I still have enough used parts to build one more with the highly sought after 79 hood and grille.

All of the model Dodge trucks from the 70's were based on the MPC tooling made sometime in the early 70's. The hoods are the same from around 73 through 78, and the grilles were changed to update to the new models.( just like the real trucks). Anyhow, in 1979 Dodge changed the hood went from two round headlights to four square ones. MPC tooled up the new hood and grille, and offered two kits with it. One was the "pumping iron" (which is pictured here and incorrectly shows the 78 hood and grille on the box art) and the other was the "fire fighter" which did show the 79 hood and grille on the box. Both of these kits are the same as the lil Red Express Truck (side step with Big rig style exhaust stacks and slotted rims as your only choice of wheels.) but both have the 79 hood and grille pictured on the left. One final note is that light trucks were not required to have catalytic converters in 1978, this is why Dodge made a hot rod out of a truck that year. In 1979 light trucks were required to have the cat too, so while the lil Red Express Truck was still available in 1979 lost this performance advantage. MPC however didn't bother to change the exhaust on the models. Sorry for rambling on and on...in short there have been a ton of model dodge trucks sold with the 73 through 78 hood and only two (that I know of) that have had the 79 hood and grille.
