Hi all I've been going through my builds over the last 2 yrs and I've discovered I have about a 50 % success rate (this is based on what I consider a good build or a rubbish or shelved build) I then tried to analyse what went wrong on the kits I ruined and that is 100% painting problems. Now what that tells me is my painting techniques are rubbish and I need to pay a lot more attention to that. I'm interested to know what other people think their success failier rate is and what they think they need to work on. I'm hoping this will be a useful thread and will help people to see their weaknesses. Obviously this will only work if we're honest. I would like people to give hints and tips on my painting and we could do the same for otheres who identify there weaknesses.

I've finished 2 this year, both started last year, and have started at least 5 others. One is an in between others build, one was for the longroof build which the paint went bad, then once I fixed that and was putting it together the filler let go and some parts split, on my lowrider build it was again a paint problem but that time it was masking tape that lifted the paint. On my 60's custom build I got delayed by filler then lost interest for a bit of time but it is still on the bench along with the longroof so they will get finished. I have another build that only needs a grille to finish but I need to find something that works as I reshaped the front and back with no real plan. My hot rod bug is just back in the box but only need filler rubbed down and all the parts painting but again it's an in between build. I think my problem other than paint is not giving myself enough time to do what I want with builds or trying to do things with no real plan. Sometimes though I just lose interest in a build, either cos it keeps going wrong or something about it just puts me off the build.

I have only had one failure in a long time, and that was my custom Lincoln build, which simply did not line up in the body at all which is not too bad considering i do about 12 builds each year. But what i did was just get onto a simple easy build next, just to get back in the groove, and have a win. I like to mix it up, one easy build then a difficult build, one model o might focus on the paint job, next one i might focus on the detailing, and every now and then, i throw the whole lot into 1 build, usually only 2 a year though, that way it never gets on top of me, i like to enjoy what i do, and not feel pressured.

For me, the builds I have completed the last couple years, most went ok. I would have to say painting gives me the most frustration by far. Second up would be BMF, but I blame older supplies that I have. Those two items I would have to say fall into my failure area. Success areas, Not giving up - Decals - Pictures, these areas I have improved in, but like DC said, I have had to steer away a couple times, just to shake off the frustration. But I keep watching everyone else build such wonderful things, that it finally takes over me and I am back trying again.
It is a blast to fail, sure, initially it is dis-heartening, but in the end I learn more and have fun going on. A build, is a build, is a build. It is still something we created, no matter the flaws. It is ours and ours alone, something nobody can take away and that, to me, makes it all worth while and fun!

I consider anything I actually finish is a success! However, like some others who have replied I would say none of my paint jobs are up to par. I have a 57 Chevy that I'm working on that after numberous coats of paint with wet sanding inbetween I finally just gave up and Im ready to drop it in the pond! Also have my next MOTM ready for paint, but Im afraid to start, cause I want the paint to be great. Think I may have to drag out the air brush for these two!

seem's like a guy i once knew of he restored cars but always left one part unfinished or not quite done he said if it was ment to be perfect it wouldn't have aged no clue guess he ment something's just never happen but i guess the only failure is when you don't give it a go and see what happens no real failure's just a goof now and then again a few kit's are just crap to start nm me guy's just a opinion lol hey ak before you do that to the chevy think dio pond find sorta like a very rare samba bus that was found in a lake in norway they dredged it up and restored it some folk's will go to the ends of the earth for that one car i guess guess i've alway's had a 50/50 rate either i've finished them or used the unfinished for something else
