Howdy folks:
I've gotten great info for shooting a paint job using typical paint in a can, but I've used Testor's One Coat and I need help with total drying time, when to shoot clear coat, et. I followed advice using 2 misting coats 20 mins. apart, then 3 wet coats 30 mins apart. After 24 hours, I tried to use 4000 grit to fix a few small specks on the trunk lid and it started to scratch. Not at all what I expected. Luckily it's right where the pro mod wing and parachutes will go, so it won't be noticed.
However, if I wait for the paint to fully dry (obviously it musn't be) to lightly sand the imperfections on the trunk, how long is it going to be? I've heard 2-3 weeks to fully dry, but this is "One Coat" and I'd assume if it's "dry" in one coat it should ready. I guess I should stuck with plain enamel...

Hey Mitch. I've used Testors one coat for a long time. I think you ran into some bad luck. I've never had to sand it. Couple of times I needed to retouch I found myself stripping the paint and starting over. These paints are great if your body is prepped well before (not to day you didn't do that). Hands down my favorite brand of rattle can.

Thanks, I'm gonna leave it as is. There's a long story behind this model; I bought this AMT '66 Nova months ago and I've gone through 1 body already using regular paint LOL. I've washed, primed and sanded each one to give a nice texture for painting, but I tried to get too fancy with with my 1st paint job and had to soak the body in Purple Power. It got damaged so I bought a donor off Ebay. I went through all the same steps and got so close again. Anyway the pro mod chrome wing I've got and a dual chute pack will cover it up completely. Have you ever tried the Testors One Coat gloss?

I'm currently working on a couple of 66 Novas myself. Looks like I have enough parts for at least a couple of them anyways. If you need parts or even a body if you encounter problems again. Hehe, let me know and I'd be happy to send it over. Both of mine are in the Under Construction section here. Kits are not too bad.
I have indeed use that wet look Testors makes. I love it. No complaints from me so far.

Thanks bro. I really should strip this body down (again) and start from scratch, but honestly since it's only my 2nd venture into modeling in 45 years and the wing and chutes cover up the paint blunder, I'm going to finish it off as is. If I need a 3rd model, I'll let you know LOL. It's sad I can modify the interior from a donor junkyard of part that makes the stock model's interior look like a serious pro streeter but I can't paint from a simple "one coat" system!
Don't know if it's something that would amuse you, but in our small rural town we are having an actual country fair this week complete with 4H events, rides, carnies running games (reeking of alky) and even more. The best are the evening events. We watched the truck and tractor pull tonight; we're talking up to 600hp big block Chevy and Ford motors in farm tractors and 4x4 pickups. My ears are still ringing. The full blown turbo diesel tractors were even more insane. It actually makes me want to build a truck pulling 4x4 some day with a tilt front end to reveal the engine. We still have a figure 8 demolition derby and possibly lawn mower races later this weekend. Simple minds are easily amused...

I think all that stuff is pretty cool. Maybe you can share some pics. I know some folks here would be amused.

My son took some photos of the 4x4 trucks, so I'll get them on the PC and upload a couple if it's allowed. The big turbo diesels were amazing but prolly wouldn't get too many folks attention here. I liked it when they were starting to spool them up; the stack was belching smoke and shooting fire about 3 feet in the air! I'm not a country boy being born in DC and then moving to suburban VA in the late '50's, but when your around this rural area you tend to put a "twang" in your voice to fit in. Some of these folks were retired and literally travelled tri-state to events.
BTW - today is the day I say a prayer and start misting "One Coat" gloss coats on the Nova. I'm going to follow them up with wet coats every 20-30 minutes until I get 3 done. No matter what happens, even minor orange peel, I'm going to leave it as is. I have the original body (minus the courtesy window pillar) stripped and waiting on the workbench. It'll be primed, sanded and painted with regular paint using the same technique and then I'll let it dry 2-3 weeks before attempting to sand lightly with 4000 grit to see how the paint responds. According to advice from Cruz on MCM, I ought to be able to remove any small imperfections without damaging the paint. I guess we'll see?!

You bet, .mitch. There's a folder for 1:1 cars in the reference section. Feel free to post there. Well I wish you the best of luck on that clear coating.

Hey IceMan: I found another thread over at MCM and if you give me the go ahead, I could post it here. It's about orange peel in the paint and it's directly linked to my problems with One Coat. It's the fine line about distance from your project when using "shakers" and how the propellant doesn't carry the paint far enough. Anyway, I'm going to check out your Nova's and if you have an AMT 1/25 scale body from my kit, I'd love to have it. I'll pay a reasonable price plus shipping from my Paypal account. I have a lot of spare parts too from my 2nd body purchase and I'm going to use my flat black hood/scoop combo since I put DZUS decals on it and it looks pretty cool. If I had another body, I think I could get the prep done right and try another color of One Coat; this time I'd try spraying closer to the body on it's stand so hopefully I'd get no runs or orange peel. I've got a really junk camera, so I'm going to ask one of the young ladies in our church to shoot some pics with her Canon.
Thanks bro!
