I'm thinking about doing my next kit with transparent paint. What should I use as a base coat? I was thinking maybe transparent blue or purple. I've heard of using primer, then silver, then the color. I will be using enamel as well. Also, will clearcoat have any effect? Any help would be great! smiley-confused005

It all depends how dark you want your color. Silver gold, white and black base will all give you different end results. Test it out on plastic sound, I would say.
DeeCee is out local paint expert so he might have a lot more to add.

Thanks Joel.. If you have a look at my MOTM Impala build, it has transparent red over the whole thing. I use a high metallic silver, and on this one I also airbrushed some black to darken some parts, then covered it with the red, THEN I removed some of the pinstriping tape, and gave it some more red. This is how I got the lighter lines in the roof, LESS cotes of red. It has then got a heavy dose of clear. **** Bare in mind, I only use auto acrylic paint, so I can't say how it will work with enamel, I don't have the patience to wait days for enamel to dry enough to play around with masking up patterns over the base cote.

The big scale Hawaiian Charger funny car, and my current in progress station wagon I used transparent Testors.
Started with a light coat of white primer, then I used Dupli-color universal chrome. Wet sanded this, gave them another coat of the chrome, then a few light coats of transparent. I did clear coat the funny car, because of the decals, but the station wagon, I may just polish this one.

Thanks for the advice! I always use rattle can enamel from Wal Mart or the local hardware store. This will be a '70 Super Bee Pro Street, and I'm aiming for a light blue (or purple). Clearcoat is usually Rustoleum or Krylon. I also picked up a sandpaper pack with 2500, 2000, 1500,and 1000 grits. I'll be going to Hobby Lobby so I'm sure I'll have some luck there. Also, I heard of Testors Wet Look. Is this something I may want to try?

Testor's "wet look", if I am right, are the one coat lacquer paints they have. They are pretty good, just be sure and clear coat with lacquer, and not enamel.
Lacquer and Enamel are mortal enemies, going back way before the Viking Age! Lacquer and Enamel will be forever in MORTAL KOMBAT!!!

Your mixing up your time frames mate, the vikings were long gone before mortal kombat. I say this with authority due to having lots of viking stuff being dug up near me, and none of them had a playstation, or even a sega. lmao

THAT WOULD BE SO FREAKING COOL!!!! Yeah there's loads of viking stuff in Orkney, we have a viking cathedral and most of the place names are from when the vikings ruled the island. There's a few ruined viking churches too and recently (well in the last 10 years) they found a boat burial. It's at the point that new viking stuff is no big deal but the stone age stuff they're finding is pretty mental. They say about Orkney you can scratch the ground and find something historic nearly anywhere. For example, there is a settlement thats well preserved thats older than the pyramids, even my granny owns a stone age site but it's not as well preserved. Here's the viking cathedral:-

The current thinking among archaeologists and historians is that they did have Playstations. What they searched for in their many epic journeys, and tragically failed to find, was someplace to plug them in.
