I need suggestions. On a chassis like this I want to paint the exhaust system and gas tank, but I've not found a good way to do it cleanly. If I hand paint the edges are not clean. Masking the areas to be painted seems extremely difficult because of the curves and little spaces (like between the mufflers and gas tank). Masking fluid is just as hard to apply cleanly as paint, so it's not much better. The folks who make the masking fluids claim you can trim the stuff with a blade once it's dry, but I find this almost never works well. Also the fluid can be difficult to remove. How do you guys do this? smiley-confused005

I either remove the exhaust and make some plates to cover the holes where the mufflers were, or go very steady with the brush, unfortunately, that is about the only solution. I also do the straps that hold the tank in, with some BMF, and leave the bugger black...

what about painting the tank first, then masking it while you paint the rest?

The tank is always the easiest to paint in my opinion. The mufflers usually are not. I've used tape for the tank and when I've used silly putty for a frame I painted that was molded in. I've used it on engine more often, also when painting the transmission.

Thanks all. I'd read about using Silly Putty a while back but had forgotten about it. I just picked some up and will try it out later today.

If you have a sharp pointed scribe, you could carefully scribe an indention line next to the whole exhaust that rests against the chassis. This would give you a fill lip for painting by hand.
Never heard of the silly putty thing, I could see that, might have to look into that someday. But for now, as for me, I would just carefully paint by hand after scribing.
It's not perfect, but hey, it's what I do, being not perfect, LOL

And the answer is: none of the above. Couldn't find a masking method that worked for this location. I ended up just painting it free hand and it came out OK anyway. Guess I need to have more confidence in my abilities. smiley-scared002

That is a great result, looks real nice. This just goes to show, ALWAYS HAVE FAITH IN YOUR ABILITY, or if you think you can't do it, Just go for it, it is only paint and plastic..

Thanks, Dale. If it's only paint and plastic, how am I managing to spend so much money on it?

Never a doubt Sid. I've seen your chrome detailing that I thought was BMF. Your hand painting prowess is some of the best. Great job !!!

Wanting to do a Two-tone paint job on a '61 Galaxy, which tape is better masking or scotch?

I use scotch blue painters tape - works pretty good. Just be sure and run your thumb nail, or something to burnish the edge down good. All kinds of sizes at Wally World
I also have some Tamiya fine line tape. Works well, and comes in lots of sizes - you can grab this at Hobby Lobby or off eBay
There is also a Scotch - 3M Fine Line tape you can get at O'Reilly's, or Autozone - any automotive place. This stuff is a touch pricey, but it works great! It's what the pro's use on real 1:1 cars, and leaves very little evidence. We used it on the Purple Cuda we had in the shop, stuff is really awesome.

Wanting to do a Two-tone paint job on a '61 Galaxy, which tape is better masking or scotch? The best quality tape you can afford mate, it will give you less headaches. A painters tape with a 60-120 day removal time is best, less chance of peeling off your bottom layer. And as Tom already stated, burnish the edge with your thumb nail for a good edge.

Well the masking turned out kinda sorts. really looks a beginner ( oh wait I am one).. didn't realize the ol' eyeballs were in such sad shape. Detailing is pretty much like a vacuum cleaner. giving-thumbs-down-smiley-emoticon
