This is a really good video of what's it's like to go up Pikes Peak at speed on board. When I was stationed at Ft. Carson in Colorado Springs I lived at the foot of Pikes Peak and drove this same road many many times. Could see some of and hear the race on my back porch. It was gravel then and hairy. It's paved now and still hairy. You can see in some spots in this video that if you go off the road the mountain is straight down to nowhere and if you roll down the mountain it's almost impossible to get to you. We lost Jeeps and 2 1/2 ton trucks down the mountain like that when we went on maneuvers and left them there. What really surprised me in this video was the people lining the road like they are. We did that in the old days but it is almost unheard of today all over the world's racing venues for safety reasons. Apparently they still do it at Pikes Peak. To give you an idea of what this man has accomplished in less that nine minutes, it takes 45 minutes to go from bottom to top at 30 MPH.

Awesome post Dennis!! This Pikes peak race is the coolest!!! My twins were born in Colorado Springs, we lived there for several years, went to see the race myself once. Yep, I stood right along the road, when it was gravel!! When you are young, you don't mind being blasted with gravel as the cars speed on by, or maybe it was the beer and the high altitude, ha!
Either way, it was great.... smileyCASHS601_zps1c54a9c5
