Kinda tired of the single color wheels and wanted to try out a two tone on these wheels for the 70 camaro. I think id like to have the spokes and the inner lip in black with the outer half in alclad chrome. I been reading a lot of suggestions from masking to painting among other suggestions. but it seems like most people are dealing with flat surfaces. I cant figure out how to mask the spokes so i can use the alclad. I have some micro mask, but after some reading i found that it was not good to use on acrylic paints on top of being kind of difficult to remove. I cant chrome it first and then paint the rest cause it wont stick, so im at a loss. anyone have any suggestions for these

I have tried this a couple of times mate, one attempt I actually cut the wheel in half so I could get a good finish, as in spray quality, but I think the easiest way is unfortunately with a fine brush and a steady hand mate. Your color choice sounds spot on though.

You have to lay down a good shiny black undercoat for the Alclad chrome anyway. If it was me I would do the black on the whole wheel and then the Chrome over the whole wheel and then brush paint the black where I wanted it.

I'm assuming you're doing the spokes chrome and the lip black. Why not chrome it all with Alclad. Once dry, sand the lil enough to get the chrome off, then with a brush, paint black again.
Regardless of which way you decide to go, it's going to take some creativity and skill to pull it off.
...and here's a shameless plug....I sell resin sleeves that can be sanded down to the width of your choice. That way you can cut the spokes off, chrome them, and paint the sleeve black.

I need to strip them and finish them glossy, but I haven't figured out what route to take yet. Would the paint stick to alclad?

I was wanting to make the spokes and the inner lip to the first step black, and the rest in alclad, I kinda want it to have that wheel insert look to it, like when they are getting ready to plug the wheel with a blank by heating it up, on a real car the resin sleeves are a new idea, I doubt if I'm creative enough to do that with out some bad consequences though

One of our first contests here was based around some similar resin wheels that I provided. Here are a few pics of how the wheels were used. Here is a link to all the progress threads. All of these members did something similar to what you're looking to do. Hope that helps. jerryscherrys.freeforums.net/board/94/resin-torque-wheel-complete

Those were definitely cool examples. I didn't find anything in there about how to go about it. But I did manage to find out if alclad will hold some paint. And it will, as long as it's enamel. So my plan right now, is to strip the wheels, and apply some primer. I'd like to use the airbrush, but it doesn't look like I can get a decent gloss with it, and a rattle can just bombs the whole thing...I will have to try and find and more precise method.
Then I will alclad them in chrome, use some small masking tape on what I want to keep and paint the rest. I will post my progress. I hope this goes well.

They do make liquid masking. I'm not sure of the name of it though. You brush it on and peel off when done

I did try it on one wheel, but after about ten minutes of reading i felt like it would have been too difficult to remove when it was fully dry. It still ended up dissolving some of the paint. From what I've read, most people just dont use it or throw it away because they hate it.

I did, i left it on there for about ten minutes and then took it off, yea it wasnt fully cured, but that little amount of time had already dissolved the paint that was on there.
Supposedly, I can use an enamel on top of alclad, so thats what im going to do. Spray the whole wheel in alcad, then paint what i want in black Although....I might be leaning more towards a black or silver metallic now...Its hopefully gonna be a pretty bright car.

Thanks for the link Les. I ordered this a little while ago. Waiting for it to arrive. I'm hoping for more realistic chrome than the chrome in the kits. That video does show great results and I've seen a few others that provide promising looks. Guess we'll have to see. More work than Alclad or Spaz Stix, but it might be worth all the trouble.

That stuff looks kinda cool, I thought it look dull though, it might have just been the camera, but it didnt appear to have as much shine as the paint. It did have a more mirror like finish which was nice. If someone gets it, it be interested in seeing a couple pics. Might have to try the chrome audi r8 that was on West Coast Customs. I wonder how tuff it would be to apply to complete shapes like those wheels.

Didnt have anything better to do, so i thought i would finally get these guys chromed. They didnt turn out too bad, the air cleaner turned out really nice. The fourth wheel somehow got some overspray on it, so its sitting in the superclean again..... Hopefully ill have a finished product to show soon.

well, I think for the most part i am done with these. I still have the one wheel i stripped left to do. Brushing in the black was a pain, my hands are really shaky and you can really tell in a few spots. I think with the last wheel i might try and use some masking tape and see how that works. I also need to figure out what i want to do with the other half of the wheel that you can see through the front side. Anyone have any suggestions? I also need to figure out what i want to do with the other half of the wheel that you can see through the front side. Anyone have any suggestions? I may look into buying some rings and smaller profile tires, ill have to see how the body turns out.

Wouldn't that be like looking through the wheel and seeing the brake drums? I'd paint them some kind of steel color.

Like JBailey said, do the rear in a stlle/ metal color, and maybe put a disk behind the fronts. The wheels turned out great too mate. smileyCA9464IN_zpsd9ee499f
