Guess I better get after this challenge, I seem to have been wandering around the pits checking out everyone else's race set up! Never built a Polar Lights NASCAR kit - just gotta challenge myself at the same time - (I guess I hate myself - probably should have stuck to Revell NASCAR kits - those I know!) AAAAAAAAAAAAANND............... After checking, sanding some crop circles and starting the white priming process, it's off to Hobby Lobby to grab some various blue's to try and match the Petty Blue The piece in the center is from a junk/parts aircraft kit that I use for test spraying - this I will use to spray various blue's on...

Found an old, "warm gray" spray that was in my hoard of paints, so I thought I would give it a go on the chassis I LIKEEEE - now to spray everything else that is to be gray smileyCA9464IN_zpsd9ee499f A little more wet sanding the prime white - another coat of prime white, and I do believe I will be ready for my "home brew - Petty Blue" I will be starting with a few mist coats of Fusion Bright Blue, (it's actually darker than the Petty Blue), to get a darker blue base. Then some top coats of Tamiya French Blue, lightly wet sanding between all coats of course, to get that squeaky clean and FAST finish paint job! If you guys want, you may as well just go ahead and engrave the trophy now for me -

Nice gray. I would spray some flat black from far away just to give it that coated look. Just some speckles of black. Looking forward to the blue.

You must be on my brain wave bud, was thinking to add something like that. Thinking I may go for that "Raced Version" look on the whole car. I am going to do some research and try finding some more pictures of Petty and this Torino..

Looking great so far CC will definitely be paying attention to this build I've also got it in my stash. Just a friendly heads up I've read in more than one place this kit has some fitting issues

Sounds like a "raced - wrecked" version may be in order if this is the case!

Looking good so far Tom , and I remember starting one of these PL kits and there is a small problem with the front fenders from the center of the wheel opening forward needs some work to make it not point upwards , I will see if I can find the unfinished kit and get you some pics of it to help fix the problem

Got after some spraying, most of the roll cage parts - going with a dark blue just to be different. The rims, I will be coating them with some Tamiya smoke to give them that good ole dirty boy racing rim effect Also, got the 429 block together and painted, with Model Master Ford Engine Blue, naturally... Have the car and hood drying with 2 coats of my version of Petty Blue - nothing big really - started with a light coat of bright blue, wet sanded with 2800 - another light mist of bright blue, and while that was wet, immediately misted some Tamiya French Blue. Wet sanded with 4000, and now this coat of French Blue - will lightly wet sand, and if needed, one more coat before letting it harden. Then will get after it with some PlastX cleaner / polisher, water rinse, and she should be ready for decals and clear coating

Thanks Mike, I am excited as well. Anxious to getting to the point to see what happens with the front fenders, from the "Horror's" I have heard. Like I said though, worst case, we will go after a wrecked / raced version if need be...

There's a website that will walk you step by step of this kit and give you pointers I just can't remember what it was for the life of me.

Thanks Sharp! I think it matches pretty good. The darker base, and light French Blue right away, then when I wet sanded them together, I think that really helped make this blue just a shade closer to the real "Petty Blue" That's why I am leery on another coat of the French Blue - don't want to mess up where I have it now, ya know.
No worries Mike - I am starting to think a raced version would be cool. Kind of like the raced version, Kevin Harvick build I did. Gonna do some NASCAR research from these years, and see what king of pics I can come across from this car.
Did I mention, IT FEELS SOOOOOO GOOD TO BUILD A NASCAR KIT AGAIN!

Oh yeah - got off early today, raced home to find everyone napping. (2 dogs, 1 cat, and 1 wife - Lol) So I got right after the hobby room. Paint is flying on the trees, much more to go. May not look like it, but I did get a lot done. Also "Futured" the chrome tree - (such an AWESOME tip Big D - you Rock! This works so well to keep those pesky finger prints off everything!) Then decided to wet sand, lightly I might say, one more time, and gave her the last coat of French Blue, (aka - Petty Blue Look Alike). One final, nicely laid wet coat if I don't say so myself. This time, of course, I noticed a flash mold line I missed, don't care, will just hide it in the pics, LOL!!

Almost forgot - I found this picture, and decided this was the car I am going after to replicate. One of the versions ACTUALLY from the track. The different decals version with the Boss 429!

Engine ready, lil bits on the inside, roll cage just about ready. Dash assembled, hand painted gauges. Now these look like some "old school" Petty rims/tires!! No worries, they are fresh - still have the "MAGNIFICATION TOUCH UP" to do - Lol

Thanks Mike and Dale, I appreciate it! Those gelly pens get easier the more you use them I can say. May be a week or so until I get back to this one, I am on a time crunch for that huge scale build

Just a little bit, roll cage and dash in. Starting the front framework - man, I should have stuck with a Revell NASCAR kit for this challenge. I am not sure I would recommend this kit, not great quality, directions kind of short - ugh....
