Hi all I just put my scratch built sternwheeler (18months of work) and the timing 1/6 Honda cb 750 f and the suziki gsx 1100 on eBay due to lack of space. The sternwheeler went for 10.50 and the bikes went for 3.71 and 3.76, I had the Christine did on there as well but took that off as I would rather bin it. First I thought what a slap in the face, that was some of my best work, but then reality kicked in of course it is an honest critique, money is involved and that is a true guide to the quality of my models, not sure what I could have done better on the bikes,I must be missing something.

Don't be offended mate, the majority of people who are into models like to BUILD models, personally, i would not anything for a built kit, no matter who built it, or how well it was built. The only value a built kit would have for me would be the parts i could re-use. Put them in a box and store them away if you need to, and one day, you might pull it out and think, i have learnt so much since i built that, and re-do it. Half my builds are rebuilders.

I think buyers in the UK tend to go for shiny stock builds rather than those with weathering. Maybe some of the facebook groups for the subject might be better for your more specialised builds as they tend to have people that want those builds. Ebay tends to be a bit strawberry for built up's in the UK unless it's old airfix kits that haven't been about for years

That is disappointing. I've sold new kits, open kits, parts, bikes and trucks on eBay. Many built cars and pickups. I will tell you though that from all kits on wheels, bikes are the ones that get the least attention. Cars on the other hand, I've seen go for much much more with much much less on them. Next time I'd recommend offering it one one of the forums where people have seen the progress of the build.
Again sorry to hear about the bad luck. And I hope this doesn't keep you away from bui.ding. You are an awesome builder. Keep at it.

Interested in seeing the ended listing if you don't mind. I'm seeing some built ones go for over $100

Also keep in mind if your opening bid is ( lets just say ) 5.00 and I bid 30.00 ,then no one else pushes the bid , I am going to steal it for 5.00. If its something alot of people want then the bid will get pushed. Happens to me all the time. Dont sweat it

I'm not sure the interest level there in the UK for these but another hint I recommend for future listing is to lengthen your description. With all the custom work you do, you should list all that. Include colors used, time spent building, and maybe even set a reserve price. If it doesn't sell the first time around, you get an idea of how high people are willing to bid. Relist if needed. Or try selling elsewhere.
Sometimes we learn things the hard way. I Persia lily would've paid a lot more for this and I'm not even a fan of scale motorcycles. I do, however, recognize great skill and work!

You did have lots of pictures, which that is awesome! And they were good pictures also - kuddo's there!!
I agree with Ice on this, extend the length of the auction, broaden your description, and maybe do a buy it now for like 20% more than what you would like, and add a best offer option. You can set it up so it would automatically sell for only a minimum price, and you can always counter offer, or not accept the offers. But this way, you can get an idea of what people would be willing to offer.
Another tip, watch where your auction ends up. I noticed these ended up in the "Aircraft (Non-Military) area - if someone was looking for motorcycles, they may not have seen them with your auctions listed in that category
Patience my friend, and the world will come a knocking!!!

Don't lose heart Ken, remember the bentley and how well it did for you. Art is subjective. Look at that hirst guy and tracy emin, folk pay millions for what they call art, and to me it isn't art. 2 1/2 million for half a cow, and quarter million for a messy bed?

Yeah don't let eBay buyers tell you how much your builds are worth.

Absolutely KP - just like Stitch said - "Art is Subjective" That is so true, kind of like how we all dig cars, bikes and the like. Others, maybe they are into surf boards, the next guy, he could care less about models, but is into vintage women's underwear, (wait - who said that?) - LOL - But you get the drift.
And also, I agree with Ice yet again, in no WAY should you let eBay give ANY indication to your work's value. Remember, eBay is basically an online flea market, thus, values tend to be lower. Your builds are superior in so many ways, and placed in the right format, or maybe even your own website, I would bet you could easily command much higher, and probably out-surpass RETAIL prices!!

I dearly love those sternwheelers and have a couple of the Robert E. Lee kits to build. If you had shown it here I would have bought the sternwheeler in a heartbeat. Beautiful model. Hate to see this happen to you.

Unfortunately there is no section on here for that type of thing I did post it on some ship forums I am on but they all suffer the same thing as me no room per, plus of course they are a gazillion times better than me.

Just clicked on your links mate, that sternwheeler is pretty impressive i must say. What a pity you got nothing for it though, i would find a shelf in the shed before i sold it myself though, i could not part with something i put that much effort into.
