Another trick that I use for de-chroming is bleach. I use a baby food jar with bleach, but here's the catch - it needs to be straight / unscented bleach AND most of all, fresh. Old bleach won't do it. And once you've used the bleach to de-chrome one part, chances are you need to replace the bleach. Sometimes it will work for multiple parts, but usually not. Whatever the chemical reaction is that lifts the chrome off, changes the "magic" of the bleach lol !

OK, thanks guys for the "de-chroming" tips. Those wheels look good Ice, like you said, a few touches to make them pop and they will be just right. Back to the de-chroming thing, I was only wanting to "dirty-up" the chrome, like the rims on the high boy - still use the oven cleaner?

Thanks cman.
No no no, Tom! The oven cleaner will strip the chrome completely. I've used a couple of,option for "dirtying up" chrome.
First option: black wash. Some thinned down acrylic paint...very watered down. Works fine. It flows to the corners and nicks and crannies. I like acrylic for this because if I over do it, I can dip my brush in water and reverse the treatment assuming I do it quick enough.
Second option: for the highboy wheels and engine covers, I used Tamiya smoke paint. Right out of the bottle. Shake it well, I dip the brush into the paint that sticks to the bottle top to not get so much and brush on and off til it looks good. This is also acrylic based so same thing if I mess up.
Hope that helps.

A couple of great tips there Iceman, THANKS!! And making great progress on both of them too, i thought YUK, when i saw the green wheels, but then the next pic with them on the beast, i REALLY like them, great idea, i would be too scared to strip the chrome off them, just in case it looked cr@p. very nice work..

Question on the Tamiya smoke, you shootin that through an airbrush or just slapping it on from the bottle ? I've got some mags need toned down, I'm thinkin I'll try this out !

With a brush right from the bottle. I'm not sure how it would work through an airbrush but I think that will give you a very even coverage and may not let the paint settle in the corners and around raised detail parts. In addition to toning down the chrome, I think this works a little like dry brushing as well to make the detail pop like it did on the covers of the highboy engine here.

I've got some mags from a MPC kit with the usual bad chrome. The kit is molded red, so the reds bleeding through in spots. I figured the Tamiya would camo the bleed through a bit.

Yup. It's helped on my parts to cover up the little annoying part that holds it to the tree. After sanding away a little bit of chrome, this does a good job hiding it.

Just came out of the garage. reorganized some shelves.....to fit more kits. Hahaha I also worked on the chassis for these. Mounted the engine and added the headers. They just need the wash like the rest but it's not on all fours. Worked some on the Lowboy as well. Some cutting of the chassis still to make sure it all sits low. Nothing interesting to post on that one. Will share pics of more work further along.

Paul, Tom, Frank, CMan - thank you guys. Didn't think I was going to have time to work on this but I did.
The interior for the Highboy is pretty much done.
For the lowboy, I had to do some chopping. You can see the difference in height.
I did finish the engine though. It is a monster of an engine. Had to work the firewall and a bit of the floor to clear it.
