I personally like Tamiya clear coat - using a rattle can. I am soon going to start experimenting using an airbrush and Future (Pledge multi-use)
BUT, what I have found I like the best, again using rattle can, is the Tamiya clear

You CAN NOT put a lacquer clearcoat over ENAMEL paint cause it will wrinkle the enamel paint, you Can use enamel clear or an acrylic clear. Tamiya is an acrylic paint so you should be OK with that.
Just make sure it is clean and oil free. I'd give it a little bath with warm water and a little dish soap, rinse with warm water, use a soft cloth to gently wipe it down then let air dry and wipe it down with a clean soft cloth or a tack cloth (I use the tack cloth from either Home Depot or Lowes ) just before you spray the clear on.
With the decals on I'd use a real light first coat of clear then the next coat a little heavier.

The stuff I was referring to, I pictured below. I used it, with a brush no less, on some windows of the 69 Camaro build I did. Had to clear coat the windows from the decals applied to them. It honestly made the windows clearer and look more like glass. Stuff is self leveling, so an even brushed on coat worked great! I am next gonna try this stuff on chrome parts. Big D mentioned if you coat your chrome, while still on the trees, before handling the parts, it will help to keep away the nasty finger smudging. Plus, tons of guys have said they use this in their airbrush and clear coat their builds. That's coming for me, once I get all the connectors for the airbrushes I have. Kind of hard stuff to find, I found mine in a store called Homeland, but you would think Wal-Mart, Dollar General, etc would carry this as well

Usually wait 10 to 15 minutes between coats at least, the heavier the coat the longer you should wait and that might me up to an hour.

I usually let my primers and paints dry overnight before applying the next coat. I also try to give the parts being painted a bath in between primer and paint or paint and clear. I usually wait somewhere in the 10-15 minute range for the current wet coat to flash and then I will put the next coat on. I normally do one primer to cover the bare plastic, 2 color coats, and then 2 clearcoats. I would like to get a thicker, shinier clearcoat when done so I may have to dip into my autobody class books to figure that out.

If you want a deeper shine use 4 clearcoats and then polish after about a week of drying
