This is my 1:1 toy that I have been playing with since I got it back in 2000. It was pretty much just a shell with no title when I got it. 2 years later I had it titled and on the road. It's a 1955 Mercury Monterey 4dr sedan. It is mostly built from junk I had laying around or dragged home, so now all my junk is consolidated into and organized pile I can drive. These first pics are what it looked like the first 9 or so years. And then I was left home alone and unsupervised with power tools at my disposal, and I started doing this. I call it "The Merchero"

Yow that is wild, not only is that a rare car but you made it into a yute?

I have always liked Rancheros and El Caminos, as well as wagons, and considered making it either a wagon or pickup. Since they did build a factory wagon on this car, and I wanted something different, I decided to go Ranchero on it. I used the '57 Ranchero and yutes from Australia to inspire the design path for what I wanted. Almost every time I drive it I get people asking me questions whenever I stop somewhere, even at traffic lights. I use it too. I've hauled engines, lumber, freezers, refridgerators, furniture, bee hives, you name it. I really need to get back on it and finish it. I got side tracked doing some other things on it, like rebuilding the front suspension and other stuff to keep it operational and safe. Now I need to build a new engine for my daily truck and I dragged home a '70 Corvette "basket case" that I am being prodded to do by the Corvette shop I work at.

WOW! That is really cool. Any new pics? Looks like you are doing some pretty good bod work blending in that tailgate.

WOW! That is really cool. Any new pics? Looks like you are doing some pretty good bod work blending in that tailgate. The tail gate is from a '94 Isuzu. I narrowed it and sectioned it. The bed floor and front wall are from a '73-'87 Chevy/GMC long bed. The upper part of the front wall and the window are from a '88 S-10. Also the fuel filler door is from the S-10. The rest is steel tubing, thin plate, and pencil rod for skeleton to attach sheet metal to. I don't have any newer pics, but that is how it still looks, as I haven't been able to work on it much lately.

yup are you going to paint it or leave it the way it is. When I get the all the body work finished I plan on painting it a different color. The flat black is not the best choice for Florida in the summer, which is 11 months of the year. It's like driving a pot belly stove with a good fire stoked in it.

That's such a cool ute you made once its done is it going to be a driver or show car or both, I know if you put it in a show it would win something!

Thanks Lee. It will be just a driver. Only showing will be showing up at cruise-ins, which we have around here 3-4 nights a week, 52 weeks a year. Occasionally I go to regular shows. I'll take the car, but don't intentionally show for winning anything, more of a social event.

That is wicked BAD A** Skip! It was so cool as a 4 door with the rear handles shaved! A shame to cut it up, but the Ranchero is even better! I love it! AK

A true out of the box build.....now build a model of it...... Yeh Cowboy, I've been thinking about it. I have seen a '55-'56 Mercury resin body a couple times, just need to find one again and latch on to it so I can modify it for a build.

I would love to see this built as a kit. Those resin are hard to come by. I'd say give kit bashing a chance. Maybe the front end of a 55-57 Chevy. The ranchero bed. And the rest...how about some skill and imagination.

I'm kind of with you there Iceman, but I also don't believe in reinventing the wheel when there is one out there already. There is a decent Merc body out there for this and getting it would cut down on the fab time, which there will be plenty of in other places for it. I'm patient and have lots of other things to build yet. I slacked and missed one just a month or so ago. there will be another one. I'm watching for one because I would like to do it.
As far as kit bashing on this, there will be plenty of that if I build it as close to how mine is actually built 1:1 It has a 2nd gen Camaro/Firebird front subframe tagged on it, Camaro rear axle, 33 gal. GMC van fuel tank, GMC van steering column, S-10 powerbrakes, S-10 rear window and a Cadillac 500 with TH400 trans.
