Just one question. Do they have to be period hot rods or can they be modern?

Here's what was decided when the themes were voted for: 2015 - Hot Rod / Rat Rod - my definition of Hot Rod is any vehicle pre 1960 ( after 1961 I say they are Street Rods or Street Machines ) that has been modified for speed.Hot Rods are typically older classic American made cars the have been rebuilt, modified or altered to enhance looks and achieve speed. My definition of Rat Rod is same as that of Hot Rod, pre 1960 built on a low budget, traditional to the 30's. 40's and 50's, rusty and/ or patina and some what thrown together. Thanks, my question wasn't as clear as it should be, I meant modern power but you gave the answer I was looking for. Now to see if I can get it to work.

"modern power" is the line. My idea is classic hot rods and rat rods. Lets say a 55 chevy. To put a 70 396 motor in it with tunnel ram ( modern for that car ) is a hot rod but to put a today ( modern ) LS motor out of a 2015 vette is more pushing the street machine name. Google Hot Rod or classic Hot Rods and you will see what I am talking about. Understand we are trying to stay within a theme.

Beast, and everyone, I'm trying to decide on a kit. Would a 1956 Ford Victoria fit in or would that be more leaning toward a custom? Something like this?

Custom, but i'm Australian, we did not have either down here until you guys got bored with them and started letting us steal them off you. So, i am not really an expert on anything really. I hear alot of things referred to as a Hot Rod, even more modern stuff. thinking-hard-smiley-emoticon This is just based on the little knowledge i have about your stuff, it would look pretty cool if you do go with it though, i have no objections. I think your little saying at the bottom of your posts probably sums me up nicely mate.

I always thought hotrod was pre 49 as thats how the clubs in the UK define them, and when the styling went to the modern 2 box shape. I'd like to see how you build a 56 though as I have one to build

a 56 vic like the one in the picture would be a hot rod, not really much there has been customized. Hot rods generally fall pre 1960 because after 1960 you have the start of the factory wars and the birth of musclecars thus "Street Machines"

So I was wondering if an old T bucket like the picture below would that be considered a hot rod?

So I was wondering if an old T bucket like the picture below would that be considered a hot rod? That would most definitely be a "hot rod" The wheels are wrong for a "traditional" hot rod though.

Would a salt flat racer qualify as a hot rod for this contest? More specifically a belly tanker?
