I've got an old tin of plast kote enamel paint that I am thinking to use for the body on my 50's build. It's been in a cupboard for about 7 years but has never been opened. I had a tin of primer that was about the same age and it just wouldn't dry, but a new tin of the same primer didn't dry either. Any idea if this tin will be good? Or should I stay safe and stick to holts acrylic?

Stick to the holts Acrylic personally mate, i have heaps of that stored away in an old fridge, just to keep it out of the heat, and that will last for ever, if it goes a bit thickish, just add a bit more thinners, i don't think it ever goes off. The Enamel, in my opinion is good for nothing, even when fresh, i would not risk wrecking a build by using it, and have it to never dry properly.
THIS IS JUST MY PERSONAL OPINION, NO CHILDREN OR ANIMALS WERE HARMED COMING UP WITH THIS IDEA.

Stitch, honestly? CAN you shake the paint? does it mix with the thinner if it has separated? IF this works with both questions, its good paint! I have Enamels from the 70's. thats still like NEW. a few colors I got are over 40 years old.....AS LONG as the paint pigments are not "hardened in the bottom of the can/bottle/jar, and the thinner can be shaken into the pigment and still be "smooth" flowing say dip in a tooth pick and it drip off the tooth pic...... its still go. rule of thumb, (I USE A LOT of enamels) that tooth pick trick, keep the paint thin, that it will drop 2-3 droplets off the tooth pick into the bottle within say a 5 to 8 second span of time.....Flows good, covers well, and isn't "chunky" in the container I'd say its good paint!
Hope this helps

I forgot to say its in a spraycan. After the number of problems on my escort with the same brand I'm just not wanting to have to strip paint again. I'd rather spend my time on the building and learning new tricks. I think I'll keep using enamel for the smaller parts engines/interiors etc.. as I can brush it indoors without getting too much moaning but for the body moving to acrylic is going to give me a much wider selection of colours to choose from. Its a major downside to being on an island as all the anti terrorist liquid rules mean getting paint sent means paying way more for a courier and waiting weeks for it.

that ought not make a difference if you can shake the paint. and it rattles try a scrap or so to see how it turns out (as long as it hasn't frozen or come close and gelled up inside it ought to be good paint! I have Dupli-color from the 1980's.....mater of fact, look at the last pics of my Daisy Dukes Jeep! That was one of such cans that I have! The only thing you might want to make sure of is "finish" if you use it.....Because it may come out dull if it has gelled up inside.....That can be remedied tho with some wet sanding and a good clear coat on top of it!
