I've been building models now for 43 years as of Monday of this week, the last 10 I've been rebuilding my collection 25 or so need paint & I need to finally decide colors
10 years ago I was doing base clear like on a real car I don't have that luxury now & will be relying on aerosol
What do you guys use/technique to do a long lasting paint job?
Thanks Ahead Bob

Bob, My Mopar fanatic, I myself? I use Testors for the most part )I LOVE the enamel paint for its coverage, and durability) BUT, I use ANY and ALL "Lacquer or oil based paints, really, whether air brushed, or hand stroke painted, as well as my "common" colors in aerosol cans such as flat black, flat white, gloss black, and gloss white....I also use the Home Depot cans as well from Rust-Oleum...As "Testors model paints ARE made by the same company, "Rust-Oleum" laboratory...just a division of the mother company.
IF I choose to "weather, make look used, or old, I use water-based acrylics....
Clear coat? Gloss Coat from Testors, or Clear gloss from Rust-Oleum (same thing)
I also in some cases use Patra R/C colors, Kustom Kolors from House of Kolor, fingernail polish, and others, just to name a few....
Then you have Krylon too....JUST DO NOT mix it with any other type paint, it will fish eye EVERYTIME!
I know others here will have different companies they use... I'm not saying mine are better, I'm merely saying what I use!

The first thing I would think about is the colors. Are you looking for metallics, pastels, custom colors or candy colors. In my personal experience different brands have different types of paints. If you are strictly doing rattle can, that will also limit your options.
For metallic colors, Tesotors has One Coat Lacquer that lay down smooth and even on the first spray.
Prep work has plenty to do with how long it will last as well. Last thing you want is for a nicely done paint job to yellow up it chip away with time.

When I did candies on models I use to use PlastiKote from start to finish or it would fisheye too
I'll not be doing many out of the ordinary colors

I always use Automotive Acrylics, which are all available from the can, and just treat the model like i would a real 1:1, from the fillers and primers, blocking back between stages, to the clear coat, cut and polish etc, lasts for ever too.

Ordinary color you say? DeeCees right. Duplicolor has some small cans with a wide variety of colors. Might even find factory colors.

That's what I figure for some of them but like my Mopar S/S race teams I'll use the common Testors red, white & blue with a clear coat I guess

Dupli-Color, thats one I forgot I had! (Just looked at a can of it for AMC, "Alpine White") Which will be used on my Daisy Dukes Jeep!!!!
I've got TONS of these bought from a place in Maryland when I was on vacation the past 2 times, for .33 cents a can! OR 4 for a $1.00! So... yeah I stocked right up on it! I must have 100 cans or better....

Mainly Duplicolor with some Krylon and Rustoluem. For clears, I mainly use Krylon's acrylic clears.

I've used a spray can clear made by Nason/Dupont for touchup & repairs in jambs on 1:1 cars & may will do an experiment using it over the different brands of paint My primers will be a Nason 2K aerosol & Duplicolor
My friend John (Hemi) has taught this old dog a new trick with the Alcad II #107 & the other products they sell

Now for clear, I use med clear, from black gold out of Texas, why med? it hold's the powder, and flake, better not so much stirring, or rattling the bottle while air bushing, and I use nail polish clear, the stuff is like a frack'n rock once cured, I use dupli color too, OH and lets not forget the ever present Future too.

I think it is floor polish, but i can't understand if there is any advantage by using it though when clear paint is cheap, and shines like a bast'rd when polished.

Future floor polish is made by Johnson and Johnson and is now under the Pledge branding. It works well, its just an acrylic clear coat in essence. It can be brushed on or airbrushed or you can even just dip parts in it. It has great self leveling properties. I'll get a pic of the new label when I get home so you know what to look for at Walmart lol.

Future floor polish!!...I hope they never stop making it. I been using it on all my builds now. works great over folkart, apple barrel and all craft acrylics.I paint the body's and every part of the model with craft acrylics then clear coat with future. comes out looking good..And the best thing about it you can do it in your home because it has no bad smell. great stuff!!

Advantage, by the time yer done with your 10th can of clear, I still have well over half a bottle left, Advantage, can be air brushed, sponged, dipped, and just brushed on, Bottle only cost ya about 7.00, after taxes, so about the cost of one can of Dupli-Color clear, just to name a few advantage's.

I'll be looking for this stuff as soon as i know what in the hell I'm looking for! As I heard about the stuff, just never seen or well looked for it....
Sounds like a damn good model product to me... I hear its GREAT for adding decals to actual vinyl tires! BUT can you "dullcote" over top of it to rid the shine? (Floor polish is like a serious glossy finish as it sounds to me!)

You can dull the future by lowering your air pressure.. And by doing fast dry mist coats with your airbrush

And another good thing about future is you don't need to thin it.

Hey ya Jesse, any luck on those pics of the bottle? I don't want to spent my slush fund, (Modeling money) for it not to work, possibly ruin my model, and then the wife end up with it for cleaning purposes, yeah that last one! LOL Talk about a triple wammie!
