....Thunderchicken....What does the box say for a motor? It is an old kit, I remember seeing one or 2 of them in the local hobby shop in the I think the mid to late 90's..... AMT-Ertl kits back then, were pretty good kits to todays standards.....Accurate too for the most part!

AMT-Ertl kits back then, were pretty good kits to todays standards.....Accurate too for the most part! Well the engine lacks certain detail like the dist cap, heads and intake were molded as one piece  The chassis and suspension is molded as one, also has two metal axles. I remember building this kit many years ago. Stock build: 390 cu in (6.4L) FE V8 Custom build: 427 cu in (7.0L) FE V8 My research lead to these two engines Hope this helps...   |

A mixture of Stock and Custom so far, but I think the color will be Testors 1845 Mystic Emerald Green, I prefer Tamiya so still thinking.... lol Still working on the engine block at this time.  Got the plug boots in  Still need to smooth out some lines...  |

I'd go for the old 390 engine, "period correctness" BUT its yours so.... just a suggestion!
Looks as tho, you got some valve cover to dig out too! painted, or Chrome? MIGHT be the determining factor if its the 390 OR the 427....Besides the smoothing of part lines, it looks GREAT, nice detail work man!

...NICE! So being Chrome, which engine they more resemble? 390? 427? Well with the chrome valve covers it would look like the 427ci. I could strip the chrome from the valve covers with "Easy-Off oven cleaner" and paint the covers and air cleaner Petty Blue and it would look like the 390ci. |

LOL Tamiya spray TS-10 is the closest color to the real Petty Blue and that's what I will spray them with. If you look at my research pictures above the 390ci has lite blue valve covers and a lite blue air cleaner. I haven't decided on what version of engine I'm gonna build, I'm still working on the block. I've been looking thru my parts for valve covers to use instead of stripping the chrome off the covers that came with the kit. |

I'll have to look and see if the local shop has that Tamiya TS-10 Spray and see how close it is....They offer this as a air brush color by chance? (I'll mix it to make it even closer to the real "Petty Blue") As I seem to be pretty good at it!
I have to agree, I HATE removing chrome from valve covers, just to paint them, it just doesn't seem right to do to me! BUT, I've found a way around it....I'll make a mold, cast my own that aren't "chrome" and paint my castings and save the chrome ones for a other model needing the "bling" look......BUT, thats just me! LOL

Looking good Steve! Nice work on an old tool of a kit. If you want some non chrome FE valve covers I probably have an extra set! Keep it up!

I know, it's always a tossup to chrome or painted valve covers on a stock build. But I do like the plug boots!

No I found some valve covers in my parts box to use. Get a plastic container with a lid and put you pards in and completely cover the parts with Easy Off foam oven cleaner spray (use a paint mask) snap the lid on and a few minutes wash them off with water and thats it, real easy. |

You can also use bleach or purple power to strip chrome and they don't hurt the plastic at all. Steve, that engine came out great! |
