So, to get into the whole Dukes of Hazard thing, I went out, and found the cars and there are a few, I'm still in search of....BUT I picked up a couple here and there used, partially assembled needing help, and some, brand new....
So, I found Daisy's '74 Plymouth Road Runner, I HAD to have it, and the picture on the box, says SO, God, I'm young compared, but she was gorgeous back in the day!
Anyway, I got the kit home had to go through it, you ALL know what I'm speaking of here, you just can't "get" a model and not open it and go through it WELL, this one was one of those that was opened and was partially started or so it seemed! Turns out it was opened, robbed of its engine block and transmission and not opened by the same guy, again!
Thats OK, I got enough "stock" to put a power plant under the hood, not a big deal.. surely not for me!
I "HAD" to look and see what the interior shown to me to make a judgement on what engine to use, AND OR what engine and transmission combination to use....The interior, shows this car to be an automatic transmission, OK thats good, BUT it was a '74....WHICH, this was a questionable time for "Big Blocks" due to the new emission standards coming about just a couple years earlier....
The instructions show and call for a 440, not this time! (SURE, I had a 440), BUT, they use them A LOT, and really, Daisy and a 440? Really? I thought she got away with most she got herself into just by her looks and actions! She didn't need a "fast" car, but a decent get up and go won't hurt, SO I opted to use a 440 as a 383, with a 2 barrel in this one! Why? WELL it was, after all its a '74, AND the 2 barrel made it a bit easier to get by the emissions standards of the day back then!
So, I started with:
Not a bad looking engine, no sir, BUT what fun it is to match "Mopar Engine Turquoise"!!!!! But, I did it....Engine fits and well looking at it, it LACKS a lot of detail....That wasn't going to stand up to me and go between a set of model frame rails!
I made the factory exhaust manifolds MORE like those Ma Mopar would have used. not that they needed a lot, BUT they did need some filing work to make them "look" as they should!
Which is seen here in the pic above! I also changed the oil filter to a more "oil filter" looking detail part that I had....
2 barrel carburetor on the intake, looking good, with a fuel line and filter coming from the factory mechanical fuel pump. (It will also have a feed line going to it from the frame when in the car!)
Spark plug wires and distributor in place.... The wires from a 50 ft spool I got from Radio Shack, and the distributor, is turned on my lathe! You can also see the "white" coil hanging in the air as it was just glued onto the wire for it, and hanging to be painted (as of this posting it is paint and needs mounted to the intake!)
A good view of the fuel line, again, going into the factory mechanical fuel pump!
The finished painted belts and pulleys.....
The belts and pulleys with the alternator in place, detail painted to have the copper wires visible through the casing of it, PLUS the coil and battery wires coming out of the unit to go into place in and around the engine and battery, when in the engine compartment of the car!
For now, thats all I got done! As always more to come as progress happens!
ENJOY!
