Detail Section?

I use all sorts of "crap" (word for lack there of) to make whatever detail I need to come up with....I also have a metal lathe and a milling machine for use whenever I wish too (that is a rarity these days) but I know, I've got some special tools that just aren't out there anymore like they once was. Mine is a Unimat, This tool is priceless for modeling ventures! I make EVERYTHING from pulleys, to oil filters to fuel filters to axles, to tire "rim "backs" to drum brakes, to you name it IF I have the materials to use to make it, I'll at least try! I make my own carburetor fuel line "T's" for running a common line and have 2 branches for a 6 Pack, and have the fuel filter just before the first carburetor....I mean I really get into detailing! I plan to have 1/24th scale "bullets" on the passenger side floor, of my '78 Monoco Police Car thats Rosco's Patrol Car.....

Then you get into throttle cable and return springs, (I've got them by the hundreds) the return springs the mechanism, and cables, I make from wire....

I too make my own oil dipsticks, I make my own starters as needed, I even have the ability for molding and do a bunch of that as well!

See, I'm a modeler, sure, BUT whats more, I used to make models for a living....I have and own an old Train repair shop, where I worked on N scale to G scale model trains, and done every imaginable thing you can think of.....I grew up, a model builder, and did model cars in my teenage years when I was a visitor to the local garage, and got intop it that way and then the owner had me sanding on real cars, found that I could spray paint VERY well, and got into painting REAL cars.... Well the modeling just got worse after awhile....But because of health reasons, I had to close the shop and retire, early due to open heart surgery last year,. and then it got me, my Dad bought me a quarter scale Hemi engine model for Christmas, and then right after that my Step-Mom found a model of my Dad's real '39 Chevy Business coupe and asked me to assemble it it for him, and i took it on and that book I thought was closed, reopened to be back into the model cars, once again!

BUT aside from all this, the detail aspect gets me! I mean as much as I can put into a model the better I think it looks almost "replica" type modeling, and its fun! Specially on those cars you love and other hate for what they are or known to be, makes the lesson on the history that much more fun!

So, not am I playing and building a model, I'm learning of a real car from a time I never got to live! The muscle car era was over by the time I was born!

Plus lets face the truth, I'ma Mopar fan and when was "Mopar" REALLY famous? The Muscle Car era! Plus out of all the cars made Mopar or ANY of them I love the sheer looks of the '70 Dodge Coronet, no matter which version, I even LOVE the looks of the '70 Dodge Coronet Wagon! MY FAVORITE car.....

Anyway, I'm even more a Detail fanatic then I am a Mopar fanatic so.....Thought it be a good thread to start!

WELL now, you got my attention! LOL I make my pulleys to whatever assembly I'm working on, to see them, go have a look at:

ARE FACTORY AMT-ERTL to the actual conversion motor....





The pulley's powering the "blowers" ARE of my design on the lathe, I also made a aluminum form to make the belts conform around the pulleys and glue into place! As the belt material is from Everygreen Styrene strips!

I also turned the dual "Coils" seen hanging upside down in red and black on the side of the blowers, those are turned as well as that yellow oil filter it too was turned by me.....

Then you have the "T's" what have I done thats got them...hmmmm OHHHH yeah here ya go:



Daisy's Jeep, the rearend has the brake line crossing it, OK? to the right of the rearend pumpkin, you see the black "hose" that connects to a small part that the silver pipe goes through, (and yes, the silver pipe goes all the way through that "T".) And then in the center of it, is a hole drilled to have the black hose connect to it.....

Then the "T's" used on a 6 pack set up for the fuel lines:





This last pic, shows the whole fuel line routing, this is a stock Mopar 440 with stock 6 Barrel (its a Plymouth) Carburetor set up for the motor! (Dodge was known as a 6 Pack)

Trying to think what else I've done detail wise not normally seen for sale as detail parts.....

So anyway, heres a couple more of that SAME 440 6 barrel shown above!



This shows the Carburetor set up plumbed in, it has the fuel lines, and both the vacuum line, that powers the "Air Grabber" hood scoop, AND the PCV valve hose work, that goes to the one valve cover. It also shows the carb. linkage that leads to the throttle cable, with a return spring!

I have yet to wire in the starter, and add the black wire from the Alternator to the battery and ignition box on the fire wall,.

Then the only detail left is to add the block breather line from the other valve cover breather cap, to the air cleaner, and pick a 6 barrel air cleaner to can be made "removable" to keep from hiding all this detail!

I almost forgot, I need to also add in a oil dipstick!

And naturally, paint the transmission when its all said and done, to be just then, mounted into its frame rails!



I think we ought to have some sort of "Detailing" section to the site, whether its for Engines, of ANY scale or size, to Detailing the frame, and the body, and even the interior.....

Not something often seen, or spoken about in good explanation there-of.....WOULD be a great inspiration to younger modelers, and even some sort of teaching as well! Not to mention teach the type parts of a car, or what to use to represent a specific part of a model!

Thanks! I say, I get into it, I guess....Not sure I stress it enough just how much "I get into it" is with me, almost to the point of a replica I suppose....I do like adding details on the engines!

I'm going to take what left over engines I have, (1/24th and 1/25th scales) and make a "display" of them all Mopar from small block to big block, one day with ALL "factory" engine options represented per engine! BUT, that is a ways off from now, (I want to build the models I have and those I got coming BEFORE I decide to do this one)....THEN, the detail will seriously, matter.....

Call me John, its all good! (I have been called worse things!) LOL

Anyway, I have to say, remember, I was forced to retire early.... I really am not that old, (Tho I know I seem as some have told me) But, I under went some real surgery last year, that lead me to retire before I had a heart attack.....I under went full blown open heart surgery, for 4 blockages on my heart So, in the mean time, I've been a "model maker" my whole life so why not enjoy it as a grown "kid" really....But see, I owned a shop where I done nothing but detailed "replica" models in HO scale (1:87th) pretty small, kinda stuffed the auto model interest so far back that they didn't see the light of day (or so I thought) TILL my Step-Mom found a model of my Dads real car that I inherited when he passed away in March....Brought that old flame back to burning again, pretty quick. And really? I needed the break from the trains for a bit as I had ran with them for almost 20 years! (God, I can't believe I'm saying this) that it has been that long!

BUT, with the trains, I got myself into some serious detail work over the years, right to the point of making parts from brass and soldering them together and the return is a good pay check! BUT that all paid off with the "auto" world... its a bit bigger and just that much more easy to detail because of its size!

And then you toss in the mix of what I know and love, Mopar, well thats just an added bonus, really....

Head gasket leaks? They're the devil! (I could "model" them but choose not too, right now at least....Why? Well the first models i want to make are those made to look as tho the day they were on the sales floor at the local dealership! Then I'll get to making the same models again, with road wear and leaks and such on them.....Its all "planned" out to slow me down a bit to not get more models to have to rent a second location to put all of it LOL

Plus, to add to it, I know I'm not really all that old, BUT I can tell ya with what I got in "models" to build, I'm not gonna live long enough to see 'em built, but IF I can see a fraction built and have fun while doing ALL of them, started, I'll be happy! So far, thats just what I'm doing.....

PLUS, getting to share it all with others such as the members here. and having a bit of fuel tossed on my fire to get me moving, well. thats fun too and adds to the excitement!

Just remember something, when you model. use what you know, and use what you have. make things happen the best you can, and as fast as you can handle it to be, and this is what happens! That pictured 440-6 above? That motor was made to look as you see it in about 6 hours....couples hours one evening into the night and left and then a couple hours the following evening/night. and thats what you get!

You seen my "Daisy Dukes Jeep" build? That has some serious stuff done to the engine, and the frame along with the suspension!

..For a guy going to be 36? Yeah, I've been Wrung right out....The worst that still lingers? Sneezing! It hurts LOL OVER a year later!

Anyway, I'm glad, your learning, (don't take this the wrong way) but you can teach old dogs new tricks, I'm a firm believer.....Hell, lets face it, I'm still learning too! Believe that? Well I'll tell ya, I've NEVER used Bare Metal Foil! not once in my life, but that time is coming, with some of what I've seen with the stuff, I gotta! I've also NEVER used "Flocking", again, I tell ya, I will be! I'm a pro at detailing, I will admit, I've got a bit to learn on "interiors" of cars! To this point, I'm pretty "basic" in the interior....BUT I have a few models, I want to be detailed to look as tho, they're real, right down to the A. Dog in the front seat that seems to almost bark out the window, OR the 5th under the seat......LOL

Thats my "replication" Syndrome And really, I don't suffer as most might think, its FUN, and thats what it boils down too...."What" do "YOU" find "FUN"? Notice the trend in my typing? Most of it has "YOU" in it, somewhere someplace, in multiple "whats"....Its all about the builder and he he or even she finds "fun".....

Some of that fun, is the learning to use new products! So, I've been searching out where to get this or that my local Hobby Shop is getting me the BMF so....(I like to support the local guys as much as I can as they did me when I was open in my shop (this one place, used to send me about $1,000 worth of customers a week!) So, I continue to support them and will till I am no more, they have treated and done me well, its best I return the favor even if it is from my pocket! Plus, I'll be honest, I get a nice discount too on every purchase.....But it don't stop me from spending the max, that I can on any given visit....I set out to spend $125....ALL I pick comes to $75, I go back shopping to spend that "set" amount, and they not only get it, but move whatever product....I've all but cleaned them out of Detail Masters "details" over the summer, (I've been told their supplier is having a difficult time restocking so....We'll see...

All fun tho, and thats what the hobby is about, right? We having fun.....

Right! BUT why not have a devoted "area" for that to learn, or teach others willing too learn through watching and good instruction....

To me, thats still all fun! Even I can learn, from others...

Hey Iceman, is it kewl to post video's, I really don't like them but, some people don't wanna sit there and read all the stuff, as like me, I give a full detailed account in my tut's, so people can save it in a folder, can do the same with a vid, and allot of ppl I have realized are using there phones more, and more for the internet.

Videos are even better. If you're doing pics, lots and lots of pics usually help out. Thanks for helping improve that section guys. You guys have talent and I'm glad you're eager to share it.

I do however got a good question, ANY partial kits? I'm looking for all sorts of broken up kit parts, mostly Engine parts, and at this time I'm looking for a Cross Ram, like was found on the old 50's Chrysler 300 with the 383 in it that had this odd/weird looking intake that looked like spider's legs, that had the feet turned up and a carb on 'em, LOL (Not sure how else to explain that one!)

BUT when I have "cash" in hand, I'll be getting more then just parts... LOL I seen a couple models I had to get out of Ebay,. it'll drive me nuts and its a a short drive........already!
