First off I want to thank everyone who started or finished builds, everyone who voted and of course the judges for taking the time to help us out.I just have a few things I want to say. We started out with eighteen contestants but fell to only five Finalists. I hope that next year we can plan a little better so that there are more finished builds. The judges both commented on the lack of participation. Speaking of the judges, They did an excellent job. Some may be offended by their comments ( I wish they would have said more ) but anyone that has ever been in a big time contest can tell you thats they way they are. They dont pull punchs like we do at Jerrys Cherrys they tell right up what the down falls are. And if you look I feel all their comments were spot on. I guess this is a good point for me to apologize for a couple of things. 1st Goerge Barris stood us up, after courting him for a whole year sending several emails making sure we were still a go I get the email you will see below on Thursday the 5. 2nd the score sheet was deemed by the judges to be inappropriate they both told me that instead of 1 thru 5 it should be 1 thru 10. So I will be making that change asap. 3. The "custom" part of the contest. I will be doing a better job of describing the contest and its criteria for next year. I wanted it to be a custom car show like in the 60s after all we are and off shot of American Graffiti. I was looking for bubble tops , chopped tops, channeled, sectioned and for the most part I think everyone got it I personally feel ( and this is not a shot ) that Highway Stars GTO is more of a gasser , Custom Muscles Dayton is more of a what if- as in what if the factory built a 66 Charger Dayton and even Knarfs 4x4 vett some saw it as a vett on a 4x4 frame - I did give him custom credit for making it into a pick up. The judges also talked about the pictures. An I cant stress this enough there are instructions in several places that tell the pictures you need to post , one front or rear, one side , one motor, one interior and one frame . And you have to make sure those are your first five pictures. One car was penalized because they didnt have an interior picture. Ok with all that said I hope we all take this as a pep talk and we start planning for next year. I will be going after three different judges, I will modify the vote sheet , I will add to the description of what is a custom and I am going to start building as soon as I am done with my decade build. So again thank you to everyone , feel free to comment on the contest and things I just covered here. The winners and contestants will be post in their threads if you want to congratulate them and to all who didnt finish I will be moving your wip pics to the contestant area and when you finish them I hope you post finished pics for us to see.Thank you everybody

the final email from john Berry Pres of KKIM .......
Hi Dave,
Alright... finally got through all this. Tried to register and it wouldn't accept my password. Couldn't get into the "messages" area because I'm "not registered". Couldn't get back into anything so I don't even remember all the vehicle names. Anyway, not sure how many places you need so I went with all 5. I really wish you could have had better participation with this one. But, just like alot of the challenges we present in KKIM, there's always interest but they fall by the wayside before they get to the end. Not sure about the "custom" designation. Unfortunately, with only one participant coming through all the way with only two true customs, it's hard to say how anyone else was building.
1st place the bubble top Bonneville - 23 2nd '46 Ford - 20 3rd GTO - 15 4th Dodge Charger - 10 5th VettCamino - 8
Glad the KKIM board doesn't give me this much grief.
Kinda fun doing this, just wish you could have had better participation. Maybe next time.
John

the final email from Bill Micheals radio personality and diorama expert..............
Here's how I scored them: Car #5 22 points Car #4 21 points Car #3 and #1 Tie for 3rd with 15 points Here's the break down: Car #1: 4,1,3,4,3 Car #2: 3,1,2,1,3 Car #3: 4,3,2,2,4 Car #4: 4,5,4,4,4 Car #5: 5,4,4,5,4 #3 should have scored higher, but there were no pictures of the interior! I could see he'd done some work in there but without clear pictures, I couldn't just guess at how good of a job he did. He also didn't put in the effort on the engine compartment like the others.
I tried to be nice in the comments but the builder needs to get a lot more precise in that area. Another suggestion: it may be easier if the scoring could be on a 10 point scale. While #2 needs a lot of work, a 10 out of 25 seemed a little low. Also, the top 2 may not have been quite as close if there was more leeway with the points. I hope my analysis was okay. Again, I'm not a car builder but I can spot what looks real and what's a dead giveaway in miniature. Thanks for including me! Bill

Some of that is tough feedback, but I'm sure we can all learn a little bit from it all. I would say next years anniversary be an open build. 60s customs are not everyone cup of tea. Then also, we can be clear on what's going to be scored, paint, engine work, interior, etc. but I'm sure Beast will lay down the rules crystal clear and pick a great category.
This is our FIRST year anniversary. With everyone's help we can do many more. Who's up for it?

Ok I get that customs aren't everyone's cup of tea, but sometimes we have to build out of our comfort zone . We have to have a theme . Having an open contest will not work . How can judges compair someone who builds a box stock to someone that builds a custom to someone that builds a race car ? What I am going to propose is we take the American Graffiti build out of the MOTM and use it for or anniversary theme . Any car in the movie or from that era . So if it wouldn't fit in the movie it won't work in the contest. That fits with this site being AG themed and it opens a spot for iceman to insert a new theme in MOTM . As for judging look at the voting sheet the only change I made was 1 to 5 is now 1 to 10 . What do you guys think ?

First Off --
Congratulations to all the winners..All did a great job on there builds..
I kind of have to agree with the judges as far as what a CUSTOM should be and not be..All the builds were great in their own respect, and a full on Custom should not have to compete with a Street Machine..Which I have done with Real Cars at Shows..That being said - it was a good showing.. American Graffiti theme for next years anniversary theme sounds good. As I interpret it , that would be anything in the era that AG depicted , correct ? Also Definitive rules would be great.. Also where would I find a copy of the Judging Sheet , as I looked but could not find it..
Thanks Tom

Hey Gb and Ice thank you guys for all the work you put into the contest. I can say it pushed me to try a build I never would have tried otherwise. I gotta say Mr.Berry took it all a little too seriously and I think he was unfair to several of the builds, but that's just my opinion. I know a lot of effort must have gone into getting the judges and then Barris let ya down. So again thank you for all the awesome prizes and effort it was a great contest overall. Congratulations to all the winners of this contest and to all the people who entered the contest from the start. I also want to say a big thank you to Gb and Iceman for the work they do on this site for our benefit . I also thought some of the judges comments where a bit harsh as we only do this as a hobby, but hey it will not stop me from building , it will only help my next build.

60'sEra , Custommuscle , Islandrods thanks guys for the kind words. Copies of the Voting sheets can be found under Paradise Roads 'Rules of the Road ( jerryscherrys.freeforums.net/thread/26/rules-road-bracket-racing ) or under MOTM Rules of the Show ( jerryscherrys.freeforums.net/thread/28/rules-show-updated-17-14 ) and under Other Contests and Challenges - vote sheet ( jerryscherrys.freeforums.net/thread/2204/voting-sheet ) Look guys we all sit here day after day and pat each other on the back and tell each other great build and so on. Very rarely do I see a negative comment, which is great and thats what J'sC's is all about Helping each other and being a positive influence. But now ask your self how many times have you sat and silently picked apart someones model to prove to yourself that yours was better or that yours should win ? I feel the judges did exactly what they were suppose to do. They could have been alittle nicer, I would have preferred longer comments myself. They were asked to give Honest assessments of eighteen of the finest models on this planet ( I believe that you guys are some of the best builders I have ever met ), I picked these guys because they specialized in Custom Cars and what did we give them ,,,,, five cars ! I am sure they too were a little disappointed. But if you look at their comments ( and we can discuss them if you want ) harsh as they may be they were correct. Even what was said about mine , when I looked at it ....they were right. Two of the cars were not customs, a third was just barely a custom. Some didnt give all the pictures and thus was underscored. Brush strokes, decal edges, unpainted parts. All they did was point out the stuff that we miss or over look because we do it for fun. But now we have learned something, maybe we will get more picky, be alittle more detailed or try something different, but in the end it is what will make us all better modelers. I loved all five models, I didnt even vote for my own because there was one that I liked better then mine. I know they were tough but if you really look at it they were right. And if any one wants to chat about it I think it could be good and maybe help some to understand. As for future Anniversary contests I plan to ask a new set of judges each year and i like the idea of using the January MOTM theme for all future Anniversary contests. I will define the rules, but for now if anyone wants to start building for next year check out the theme January MOTM

Here Here GB... I'm with you a thousand per cent..The builders did a great job on there builds , but I also think the Judges did a Good Job to..They looked at the cars and said what they saw, probably not being builders themselves , and judged on what they saw or Did Not See. Being back in this hobby after many many years - the overall quality of everyone's builds are far more than I first expected to see. I roam through this sight ( and others )" but mainly this one " , and usually find a new way of doing something or learning a new trick or two as well as trying to better my skills all the time... I think we all want to do some exceptional work , but it takes a lot of practice and patients , as well as some expense. A contest like this is Great to win , but it is the fun of building that keeps us going , Right...as well as the camaraderie between members who exchange thoughts , ideas and suggestions for their on going builds..As I said before I think everyone did a great job. I for one am looking forward to next years Anniversary Build.... And by the way Congrats to GB and Iceman for starting and maintaining this sight...

constructive comments are always helpful and I think there's no way to improve without them. However like all things it is how it is stated. I've always considered honesty without compassion can be brutality. I've had a mentor in Donn Yost I've sent him pics of builds and he's been very helpful in showing me a better way to accomplish a clean build and one that appears more realistic. However HE ALWAYS POINTED THE POSITIVE ASPECTS BEFORE THE NEGATIVE ONES. I think maybe we might could consider asking him to be a future judge I think his input would be helpful and encouraging. I would also be willing to be more helpful about others builds. However I think I would prefer someone asking me for help rather than judging a build without invitation. I can say for my anniversary build that Mr. Micheals comments were accurate about my build. I did overlook painting my hood scoop intake totally black and the decal stripes were a bit short. However Mr Berry's comment of "what can I say" was neither helpful or constructive. I think he totally missed the boat about areas of the all the builds in general that could have been helpful rather than dismissing a build because it didn't fit his definition of custom.

Yes, some of the judging was extreme and some seemed not detailed enough. Was it fun? I thought so. Some of the best creations you guys have put together. It was our first anniversary contest and I thought it went pretty well. Do we have some things to think about for the next one? Of course. Like building, our contests are just getting better. I think beast and I have more contests in mind. Wouldn't put them all out at the same time because we already have a lot of builds on the bench, build for contests on other sites, and of course have a life outside of this forum. And that's ok. Thank you to those of you that entered builds. My concern here is that some may have a sour taste in their mouth and distance themselves from this place. Hopefully not. It's been a it slow lately but I know we are all enjoying the warmer weather. We know some of needed that. When I wished for warmer weather I wasn't expecting 100+ degrees either!! What the hell? Literally? None the less, I say "On to the next one!"

Very good observations guys and yes, I too thought there could of been a nicer way to say something but they were being critics and not our friends. Keep in mind Mr Yost is your mentor so I would expect him to try and pump you up rather than being so harsh. Mr Berry did point out that he like what you did with your body mods he just felt it didn't fit the "custom" theme. I personally loved that charger and thou I felt it would have cleaned house in a " what if the factory built this" contest I was concerned that it would miss it's mark as a custom. I really wish Mr Barris would have commented but I could almost see him thinking the same way. If any of you ever watched the car building show on tv in which he was a judge he was very critical when it came to customizing. I am hoping to get peopl like Stacey David , Troy Trapanea or maybe even Chip Fouse for future judges . But I thing switching to an American Graffiti theme is going to help .

The voting polls show that CMs was a favorite! Mr host as a judge would be cool as well.
I don't know. I'm pumped now!

congrats GB and CM, both well deserved wins hand-clapping-smiley-emoticon i must say that while not easy to receive, the crushing defeat comes by my own doing no comment by any judge was off base or taken personally, they did the job asked of them admirably and my personal thanks to them for helping us out high-five-smiley-emoticon my ONLY disappointment here was the participation, or lack there of, by Mr. Barris. so the next go-round is American Graffiti themed, do i have that right?

I think so Knarf I will discus it with Iceman and then I will lay out all the defining rules . Yes the Barris snub hurt, I had been working with first him then his daughter for over six months and were as I know he's busy this could have been easily done in an hour off a laptop. Up until one week before the deadline they were still on board . But oh well that Power Tower makes a stop Thursday the 12th here in my home town maybe I will see them . Ha ha ! But there are so many possable judges I think next year will be better !
