I recently have been thinking about motor swaps in a few of my models. To do so my options are A) buy a new model for every engine I am looking for or B) figure out how to duplicate the parts in the kit I already have. I decided it would be a little more economical to get a resin casting kit and duplicate my own parts. Now that I have this I would like to start trying to make molds and parts. My question is how long will a mold last? If I make a mold now but decide a month from now to duplicate that Viper V10 will my mold still be good or do they dry out? If they do dry out, is there a way I can make it last longer?

It depends on the type of silicone that you're using. The mold won't go bad or not work just because you don't use. Now this is on silicone molds. The more you use it the more it wears out eventually not being able to use it anymore.
I use the silicone and resin from Alumilite and it's worked well for my molds. Making a clean mold is the hardest part. Casting the piece in resin is the easy part.

I did get the Alumilite kit. I just hope I can make sure to get all the components mixed enough and make enough to make my molds and the same for the resin duplicating the parts.

Youre going to use a lot more silicone than resin. The good thing with the silicone is that is you dont make enough, you can add to it and it bonds together. trial and error is how I figured some of it out.

Cool, I'm glad to hear that the silicone is a little forgiving. Thanks for the info. Next time I get the time I will start making molds.

You weren't kidding when yous aid making the mold was the hard part! I worked with it for a little bit the other night but had difficulty making the box to make the mold. I heard about using Legos to build a box and go from there so I might need to ask my mom if I can have all of my old ones.
