I have been looking alot on ebay at models and prices. I have about 10 kits to sell and I use the prices as a baseline for listing mine local, (no luck yet) and list them. Looking a little deeper on ebay there are some that take a model down to each piece and list them and price the parts. What I found kind of blew my mind. I bought a Fire Fighter Mustang kit and looking towards the end of the auctions somebody had the kit I bought for $20.00 bucks listed piece by piece. Working on Mopars in the 1 to 1 world for years I know a little about availability and price and demand etc and with Hobby Stores bailing out of the 'drastic plastic' world the market is going more mail order it seems to me that there is money to be made there. Well, back to the Fire Fighter kit story I did a little homework and figured the person selling this car piece by piece was going to pocket close to $300.00 bucks for it! I realize they actually have to sell all the parts and go through all the motions etc but it just seemed a bit over the top to me. To add to that I watch bids on certain sellers and see they will list a body of a car like a 72 Challenger I watched and one week the body will be for sale then a week or two later the same seller lists the hood or bumpers or tail lights. By the way, the body went for $25.00 bucks. Later the hood is $8.95 and the front and rear bumpers are $6.95 each and the red tail light strip is $8.95. Grille insert was $1.00. Front and rear valance panels were $4.95. And the glass was $7.95. My thought was just sell it all as a unit but that $25.00 body would have had to sell at over $75.00 bucks for everything and would not have sold. Is this what the hobby has come to, the 'greed' factor?? Chas.

I've saw that stuff and honestly think its just plain stupid. Sure if you have one rare piece but to break up a whole kit no way

You guys know I sell on eBay so I've done some research on this specific listing practice. I asked a couple of sellers and they all said very similar things to me. Think about it like this, not all builders save parts from older builds after they're done building. I remember not doing that myself a few years back so I would actually throw away left over parts or parts that never made it to the complete stage. I've learned from that mistake. I personally list kits individually but don't break them up. I list 40-60 kits almost every week. I have a few loyal buyers that usually buy some of my sealed kits with the intent of breaking them up and selling the parts. They definitely pay, what I think, is sometimes too much for a kit but they definitely make their money back. They say that not all buyers are looking to spend the full $20 average on a kit for a single part they need. So paying $7-$8 for it is fine for them. The do make 5-6 times more for the kit if broken up in parts. There's obviously a demand for parts like this or else sellers wouldn't take the time to sell that way. While I list 50+ kits every week, these guys can list 10-15 kits in parts and almost make the same amount I make
I wouldn't call it greed. To me it's smart business but I would find it tedious to ship part by part. Also keep in mind some of that profit has to go to a lot of shipping and fees.
To each their own, I would say.
Just my two cents

i suppose in a way it's like real cars, some cars can be parted out for more than it could be sold as a whole unit. in some ways i don't like it [for plastic kits],as some of the kits are hard to find, but for real cars, i can understand it if the bulk of it is rotted beyond saving, but has good parts to further another one.
funny how we so deeply connect with some stuff.

I'm with IceMan and tbill. When I first noticed that trend on Ebay it started to get under my skin a little, but after I thought about it I seen it differently. It gets down to investment of time and money vs. profit and what the market will bear. Yeah I think there are a few sellers that are on another planet, but hey, they won't get my money either. Unfortunately it's just like tbill said about real cars, some kits are worth more in parts than as a whole, and there are times that $8 for the part you need vs. $20 - $25 for a whole kit can make sense if you don't want the extra parts you may not need. Personally I don't mind buying a whole kit for a particular part because I will keep the extra parts for kit bashing or whatever.

....crap I'd simply LOVE to get a half decent '67 to '69 Plymouth Barracuda that is merely a shell, interior, and frame for 1/3rd of what I've seen them go for.....And a few that wouldn't sell locally the guy would not hear to being talked down a few bucks, over a year later......
I'm trying to make a model of a friends 'Cuda I've worked on and its a '68 BUT with a little work, I could get it to look the part as a model.....As I worked on the thing....Nice car, (Never have built a 'Cuda) so.....
Be a fun build!

This one takes the cake. Ebay has a listing under MPC Dodge Trucks for a super rare and very hard to find D series 1979 Grille. Opening bid is $9,999.99. Thats not a typo and this is the opening bid. I know this is not what the guy has in mind for a real number for this as there is an offer button. This grille is not that easy to come by but its worth drops a bunch without the smooth 79 hood to go with it.

I myself have always HATED the eBay "Parts Parters" if you will. Just drives me nuts that someone can tear down a kit and part it out. But for me, I would rather buy he whole kit for just what I need, then I would still get most of the complete kit. Just makes no sense to me to spend 8 dollars for a bumper, when I can get the whole thing for 20-25. But like Ice said, I am sure they would not do this if parts did not sell. Supply and Demand guys, its all about Supply and Demand. If there is a demand, someone will supply I guess.

I can understand why they sell like this. A few of the guys here shared there thoughts with me on this subject and I get it now. I still dont care for that type of sell so I just look for the entire kits. This seller though is plain loco. A penny under 10K for a little plastic grille is INSANE! I have several 79s and even a few 72 to 75 grilles. Heck! I might be sitting on some serious money here LOL.

It's crazy to part out a kit like that especially if it is a new one but people will do it especially if they are driven by money. One thing that I hate is when seller on EBay charge 6-8 dollars to ship a part & you know it didn't cost that much or they ship it in an envelope. (Crappy shipping) Another thing is when they don't allow local pick up or don't combine shipping that tops the them all.

Most eBay sellers don't do local pickup for safety and privacy issues.I do very little with eBay and only buy kits and not parts. I may have to buy parts at some point as bumpers, grille and headlights, hood and rear valence will be needed for one of my mpc 72 challenger bodies but I will look for a crummy built up or incomplete kit before I pay 75 bucks for the small parts.

I bought some parts from the parters,I had been looking for those parts for over 10 years and really needed them to save a project that I am suprised did not get thrown away.
