so first time poster. im 23, and have been making models since my early teens. i have about 10-20 models under my belt. they all look decent. they all each have their major flaw or screw up, but apart from that they are solid pieces of work. my fiance bought me a 70+ dollar tamiya nissan gtr kit. and i want this to be taken to the next level. i have never sanded or primed my kits. i want to make sure this one looks good. but i know nothing about the prepping category. first off, i need to pick up some primer. i was told duplicolor is the best. i am painting my car white, probably from tamiya lacquer, so i need to go to a lowes/home depot im guessing to find a WHITE primer? are there different kinds of duplicolor primer, that i need to look for? next, i need my sanding supplies. what are ALL the supplies i need to sand my model? someone suggested this kit: link. however, i do not want to get this kit because i'd prefer going to a store to pick up my supplies instead of paying shipping costs. in that link, are those all the grades of sand paper i NEED, or is it missing something? can i also, find the sandpaper im looking for elsewhere, for cheaper? after i got my primer and sandpaper, how do i use them? when do i wet sand? when do i not wet sand? what way do i use the sandpaper? how do i know when ive done it long enough? basically, what is the step by step process of prepping the car? and lastly, is sanding pretty fool proof? like i said, this is a 70 dollar model. i know i can make it look decent by doing what i know how to do. i dont want to destroy it by sanding it the wrong way because its my first time.

Hey Modelguy I wouldn't worry to much about sanding Tamiya bodies. May just go over them with like a 3600 grit cloth sand paper. They are so well molded they don't need much work. I have done several so look at my threads. I did the Merc GTR and the Cannon porsche will be glad to help just let me know. Oh Dupli-color is a great paint to use but don't mix using it with other brands you won't like the results it's a pretty hot paint. There is also a great step by step paint article in Scale Auto magazine. I believe it's on line will try and find it for you.
