While looking for a Hot Wheels to replicate for this months build I came across this vintage racing series Landy Dart. Since my first love is all cars Mopar, I bought it and will be using a Revell 68 Hemi Dart as a starting point.

Okay before I get started on the build, let me give a little back ground. In 1968 Dick Landy started out the season with a 440 Dart. When the factory stuffed a Hemi engine in the Dart, Landy was one of the first to get one (two actually 1 automatic and the other a 4 spd) The Revell model of Landys Dart is the 440 version while the Hot Wheels car is the Hemi version. I started with the Hemi Dart and thought I could just add the decals from the other kit... The first issue is that the Hemi Dart has modified rear wheel well openings which need to be cut open. The body has the rear wheel well opening thinned out, but according to my research seems inaccurate... Then the battery should be mounted in the trunk, so this shelf should not be here. Also the GTS emblems need to be removed as well as the antenna detail.

The springs have to be moved in for proper tire clearance. I located the springs on the frame rails. I believe this is the way the real car was done, but I'm not 100% sure. I am going to deviate from the Hot Wheels car on the rims. The die cast has rims that look like slotted discs but all the pictures I have found of Landys Darts had Cragar rims with spinner center caps. I will be using these rims and add a set of spinners from a Revell 64 Mustang pace car.

The 68 Hemi Darts were pure race cars from the factory. Nothing was installed on the cars that wasn't absolutely necessary. They came with light weight window without any regulators, instead was a piece of seat belt material that attached to the bottom of the window track and a snap on the other end so it could be snapped to the door panel to hold the window up. I had to duplicate this detail on the door panels and sand off the window cranks. I added a hole to the door panel where the crank would normally stick through. The seats were another area of weight savings. No stock Dart seats here! Lighter weight A100 van seats without any adjustment mechanism just simple aluminum brackets with lighting holes. These came from a Little Red Wagon kit and I scratch build the brackets. The dash also got some mods as all Hemi Darts were radio delete. A simple rollbar, fire extinguisher and an aftermarket tach. mounted on the steering column round out the interior. OH! I almost forgot, I also had to remove the center console.

One correction....I didn't have to remove the console, I remember now that I had one tub with the console, and another without it. I can't remember now if both came in this kit, or if I used the tub from a Landy Dart.

Thanks Tom. I do enjoy the research part of my builds, then I try to build as accurately as I can. The engine is now complete and installed in the chassis.

That engine is tight sir - very cool. Love the touch on the bottom, where the exhaust would have the chassis underside dirty - AWESOME!
