I finished this build after 4+ months of building. It was only supposed to be a simple touch up that was initially gonna take a week or so to complete. Yeah.................right!! I originally built this model 32 years ago when I was about 14 or so. I built it for my little brother back then and then as years went by and he moved from home, got married and had his own family this one stayed at my parents house. I took it from my parents house and cleaned it up a bit and glued some parts that fell off over the years back on and gave it back to my brother around 5 years ago as a Christmas present. Long story short it ended up in his bedroom closet covered up by clothes and other stuff after getting knocked off of the top shelf by my nephew. We ended up finding the hood and a wheel/tire assy that was lost for a little bit out of the fall and I pieced it back together. It's still missing the hood scoop from the hood, outside rearview mirrors and the rear spoiler but I managed to glue everything back on and repair everything else that was damaged during the fall. Now before I turn this into a "brother bashing session" let me tell you that my brother is a top notch guy. Its just that models aint his thing. Hes got a wife and two kids and he so busy he looks like a one legged man in a butt kicking contest. With that said, I took the model home again and stapled it back together again. I didn't paint it with anything more than a gloss coat when I originally built it and aside from the decals wrinkling, the finish came out PERFECT! The gloss coat was applied from a can for cryin' out loud! One of my only regrets is how the decals all came out. The interior was detailed great for a 14 year old. All you have to do is put a visor on and you can read the gauges. Of course I didn't need glasses or a dang visor when I originally built it. LOL.
Any ways here's a picture of it after I did the initial repairs about 4 years ago.
Well let's fast forward to mid October of 2014 now. I was between aircraft builds and decided to take this build down and freshen it up a bit. I had bought a spare kit to replace the missing hood scoop, rear spoiler and some other missing parts with. What started out as a one week repair job took 4 freekin' months and then some to totally revamp this thing.
Here's what happened next:
Then the body got sanded back down to bare plastic:
Stuff like the IP got a total make over. All original parts were used for this:
Before:
And After: (course I didn't use the original gauges now-I drilled 'em out and used a flat piece of styrene stock with the decals adhered to it and attached from the backside of the IP)
The motor:
Before:(and this heap just had to go-All new parts were used for the resto)
and after:
The interior got a freshen up and I used all the original parts (except the shifter-that was too ate up to reuse) there as well:
In staying true to the original build theme I did NOT use any paint. I left it the OOB molded red color and used rattle can Model Master Ultra Gloss on it. Decals are the newer set in the latest release of this kit. Tires and wheels as well as the complete chassis have all been replaced. The originals were just too far gone to restore.
