I've read in the mags that many people have trouble lettering raised letter model tires. Me included. Most people sand them off and decal them. I refused to give up trying and I found something that is working well for me. I bought this white gel pen from Hobby Lobby, it's called "Jelly Roll" or something like that. It works great with a little practice and if you make a mistake just wipe it off as long as it is wet. When it dries it's tough and doesn't rub off. My pics are too close but you can see I painted in the large letters and rubbed across the small letters and it worked on them too which I thought was cool. Just wanted to pass it along. You may already know about this trick. It looks much better from a distance.

That looks pretty good Dennis. I had read about those gel pens. Can you take a pic of it so I can get the same one.
I've also read using a cd and putting some paint on it Nd then you set the tire on it and of course it only paints the raised part. Not sure how angled the letters are or if it will work.

The pen is called "Gelly Roll" the letters are in white on the pen so it is hard to get it to come out in a pic so you can read it. I'll get more info off of it if I see anymore. Got it at Hobby Lobby. I've tried the CD thing and it didn't work for me. Just messy. I've tried about every trick I have heard of and this really worked the best so far. I don't like to sand off the letters, but I would if I had to, I have nice decals and like to use them. It just seemed a shame to waste nice lettering when it is already there. If you look at my "Blue Max" build those tires ,front and back, are lettered with the pen. They are the first ones I did with it so they aren't real good because I hadn't practiced with it but you can see it works and tough when it dries.

I'll be remembering this one for the next trip to Hobby Lobby (I got there every now and again) so......... I've read about using Gel Pens but no one EVER mentioned what one works for them, as I've heard others say some work and others say they don't..... so..........
NOW I'm "Armed" when I walk through the doors at Hobby Lobby!

Another trick, that I tried once or twice, is using chalk. My wife does a lot of ceramics, and I have once or twice used her chalk to scuff the raised letters. Blow them off lightly, then very gingerly coat the tire with some flat or semi gloss clear. If I remember right, the last time I did this, I had the can about 2 feet above the tires, WAY up there, to let the clear kind of snowflake down to set the chalk. Once that dried, I repeated the process, then a final regular coat, using decal spray. Maybe I will try to work up a tire and post some pics, but for sure, I am gonna look at Hobby Lobby for these gel pens, I can think of lots more uses for these!
Thanks for the tip Big D!

I looked at Micheal's Craft Stores for these in the local one to me, nothing....... BUT I have a few other places to go as well as the local Hobby Lobby even tho its about 45 minutes away, Its worth going, as there is a Hobby Shop in the same plaza, thats where I get the cheapo open model kits! Again, thanks for the heads up Dennis!

It looks like it would work on white walls as well and be almost perfect for white band tyres. Will have to try this some time. Thanks for the tip

I picked up two of these pens when I went to Michael's tonight, they're $1.99 each and in the scrap booking area. Here's a quick test I did on an old NASCAR tire... IMG_20141123_005120_364 by ratrodfanbobcat, on Flickr

I did these tires while I was detailing the wheels. They look much better than the pictures. My hands aren't as steady as they used to be. The thing I wanted you to see was how the very small letters came out. I just rubbed the gel pen over them.

Finally found me these pens, Dennis. Thanks for the tip. Oh and Hobby Lobby has model kits 25% off in case you're buying more than one. If you're only getting one then stick to the 40% coupon.

They have been doing that lately with model kits - been marking a lot of them down. That's good, but kind of scary, hope they are not getting out of the model kit thing, just about the only place to really get new ones anymore.

I too have found these Gel Pens at Micheals, recently... I was sort of skeptical, when I was lookin' but for $1.99 I thought WTH, I'm not out that much if it doesn't work, (The other Gel Pens I looked at where a LOT more $$$$$ up to around $9.99!) So, I indulged, for $1.99.... I have to say, a short bit of "adjusting" to the use, but it happens QUICK so... not to bad for my first tire doing this sort of thing! I picked up the pen, hoping it was a good one, DID NOT realize, it was the same one! PHEWWWWWWWW phew-smiley-emoticon
