Okay, In the movie a girl called Bobbi has an orange VW bug convertible. Curtis was riding in the back seat when a car pulls up beside them with a guy called Guy. Bobbi asks Curtis to say something to him because she wants to meet him. When Curtis says something to the effect of, " Hey Guy, Bobbi here loves your rippling biceps!" This pisses Bobbi off and she promptly pulls over and throws Curtis out.

So, a couple of weeks later Guy sees Bobbi at Mels and approaches her. Long story short, they hit it off and and get married in '64. In '67 the young couple let Bobbi's little sister Lucy have the VW when she got her licenses. She drives the car a couple of years around town then when she heara about a big outdoor concert in Woodstock....

This should be interesting. popcorn-and-drink-smiley-emoticon
She doesn't name the car Brad by any chance does she? Then fall in love with Brad. Then one day,...WHAM!!!, an 18 wheeler crushes and kills Brad. But her insurance will replace Brad, and she will move on to another car and forget all about Brad.

Skip you're WAY over my head on that story line my friend thinking-hard-smiley-emoticon....As the story unfolds Lucy gets together with a couple of her hippie friends and they set out on the road in the Bug. Somewhere on route 66 near Oklahoma City they run off the road and hit a telephone pole HARD! Tow truck hauls the little bug to the yard and Lucy(with no money, no insurance and no way of fixing the car) signs the car over to the tow company. The little bug sits there for almost a year. Then one day the owners son asks his dad if he can have one of the old "junk" car from the back lot to fix up in his auto shop class in high school. The kid is thinking maybe that old 64 GTO with the 389 tripower set up, but dad vetos that and tells his son that he can fix up that orange VW.
The kid works on the car his entire Jr year and most of his Senior year in high school without any input from his parents. Follow along to see what he comes up with...... smileyCACETROO_zps365bb43e

Cool story, now if the kid was smart, he would do up the bug WITH the GTO running gear.

Overpowered? Click, click, click, click, OVERPOWERED? Searching Johns Cranium, and noting exists in here that resembles a word, phrase, even in the dustiest places, OVERPOWERED doesn't exist in his vocabulary!!!!! OK lets see, Beetle, GTO running gear, turbo 400 or 421? in a Beetle? A Super Charger, along with a turbo? Yeah that sounds like rip the car in half kinda power! But fer gods sake do away with those hideous damned "flower power" on that car! GAWD my eyes hurt...... I like a lot of things from the "'60's" but there are SOME things that ought have STAYED in the '60's! Them damn flowers bein' one of some such things! GREAT story Alan, and can't wait to see this beetle all tricked out, IT MAY ACTUALLY "fly"..... and NOT "high" again! evil6

Well my 10 year old puter is on it's last leg and it's a pain everytime I open Photobucket because it starts freezing up! Good news is that I'm going get my Christmas present early and buy me a new one this weekend! two-thumbs-up-smiley-emoticon Anyway, I wanted to post a picture just to let everyone know that I am working on this, but I also didn't want to give away too much just yet. In this picture you'll see that I'm done with the basic engine and drive train. I still need to finish putting the belts and hoses on (paint is drying), and I'm still debating on wiring the engine. You'll also notice that the roof has been cut off. Bobbi's Bug was a convertible so cutting off the top was neccesary to replicate her car better....Wish I could have left it on, but ol'well ! You will get to see some mock ups before the roof was removed! I think it looked pretty cool with the roof, but also looks pretty darn good without! One last thing is that you can see the the body was painted before I cut the top off, so I had to do a little more painting....More pictures Sunday or Monday! Then you'll get to learn all my secrets for this little VW!

Merry Christmas to me....Merry Christmas to me....I got my new laptop! egyptianYEAH!!! I'm siding with Ice.. the seen tires look like Pick-Up TRUCK TIRES!!!!!!!!! I'm in total suspense here too on that note! These are the tires that came in the kit. The rims I'm using are going to be from the current 53 Chevy Panel gasser kit. They fit the stock ties and wheel backs perfectly

NICE ta see ya got a working 'puter Alan! two-thumbs-up-smiley-emoticon Those are some serious tires! I have a set pretty close to those and I thought they came off a Ford F-150 I think so.....BUT I got those I have in a box of junk I found with models in it at a yard sale over the summer with a few junkers in it but good for parts for a buck so..... thats why I thought they were truck tires and maybe they did put truck tires in that kit to be a "taller" gasser? ??

Its looking good Alan!
Guys, you have to remember this is a beetle. Not very big so the tires look huge lol. I had this kit years ago, the tires are pretty small in comparison to large car/truck tires.

As promised, here's an update. Sorry the pictures aren't in order, but I didn't want to let the cat out of the bag too soon! Here's what the high school kid was up to in shop class.... First he pulled and rebuilt the engine. Then started thinking The teacher has that old panhead Harley sitting in the back...hummmm thinking-hard-smiley-emoticon. His shop teacher told him that he only needed the engine and trans from the Harley and that the kid could have the rest of the bike for $50. (remember this is 1972!) SO after buying the Harley frame He cuts off all that bent up sheet metal and grafts the neck and forks to the VW frame! As I've already told you guys I didn't realize that the VW in the movie was a convertible until half way though the build, some the top will be coming off later....

Here's another mock up And after finishing grafting the front end on, he split the gas and widened it for more fuel capacity. Now you are all up to speed as to what's happening to Bobbi's little orange bug! Hope you guys enjoyed the story as well and what's going on in my world! running-around-smiley-emoticon

Thanks Joel. I've known since high school about kits where you cut the VW frame from the body and graft a set of forks on then add a fiberglass body. A few years ago I saw one where the rear half of the bugs body was left on. I knew I wanted to build that in 1/25th scale since that time and thought this challenge was the perfect time for me to get my rearend in gear and get it built!
